Letter to the ACP from an American Priest

To the Leadership Team:

Three cheers and then three cheers more!  Whether or not your Association of Irish Catholic Priests makes any headway regarding the New Roman Missal, the courage you show in asking correct but difficult questions at this point in time is an inspiration of a small group of priests in the USA.  Our hope is to follow your example and create an American Association of Catholic Priests.  We feel it is one great way to stand with you and together work for a Catholic Church where all people are welcomed and regarded as equal.  The need for better communication and collaboration between bishops and priests is painfully obvious.  The New Roman Missal is only one of a whole host of questions that need further discussion.  Keep to the high road, stand together, and continue your work!  God bless your efforts with great success.  Fr. Rejuvenating Church ?

The CDF has issued its first document, “Iuvenescit Ecclesia” or “the Church rejuvenates.” under Pope Francis.
Can a leopard change its spots? Not according to some commentators;
“Much of the text reads like the “desk-bound” or laboratory theology that the 79-year-old pope finds unhelpful.” commented Cindy Wooden, Rome bureau chief of Catholic News Service.

Others such as Massimo Faggioli see it a little differently;
“There is a very interesting admonition about ordained members of new movements that seek ordination to serve only their movement (par. 22) – a very well-known problem that so far has been officially denied by the Church leadership – and an interesting phrasing about the danger of having the movements creating a “parallel” path in the Church (par. 23). This is something that came up at the 1987 Synod, but no pope before Francis had the courage to talk about. There is also the clear intention of Francis not to create new precedents in the recognition process of new movements.”

Chris McDonnell, writing in the Catholic Times, states what should be obvious to all; “Renewal and repair is not only a clerical task, for clericalism has been one of the deep seated roots from which have grown our present dysfunctional state. The laity must willingly accept the burden of reformation, bringing their skills, talents and experience to the service of faith. And they must be listened to, not brushed aside as an inconvenient irritant as has so often been the case. Parish councils, Diocesan councils are not an optional feature but play an essential part of our journey, they facilitate meaningful exchange.”
