A DIVINE

CALLING

One Woman’s Lifelong Battle for Equality
in the Catholic Church

Soline Humbert & Dr Mary McAleese

Thursday 12th Feb, 8 – 9.30pm London time
“Some time in late 1974  I became aware of a calling to the priesthood (or presbyteral ministry, to use the proper description) surfacing in me”, writes Soline Humbert in A Divine Calling. “It was the last thing I expected and nothing, absolutely nothing, had prepared me for it.” As she lived through earning her degrees, marriage and motherhood, the call returned, loud and clear.

Join us to hear Soline outline the highs and lows, the joys and the utter grief that this conviction brought her, belonging to a Church which proclaims that “the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women”. The endless snubs, the bruising betrayals from the institutional Magisterium, the “spiritual death sentence” that she has lived through make gruelling reading. Her unrelenting courage, however, is humbling to hear.

The vitriol she has had to endure from “good Christians'” and clerics alike has been painful beyond description, even to the point of being threatened with “violence and rape to put me right.”

Yet you will not find Soline bitter, nor anything but loving, laughing and trusting in the Spirit. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet her. Bring her your questions.

In conversation with Soline will be Dr. Mary McAleese, President of Ireland from 1997 to 2011, broadcaster, academic lawyer and canon lawyer, and the author of the foreword to A Divine Calling.

Mary pulls no punches. As someone whose successful life mission in politics was Building Bridges, she is powerfully outspoken about the shortcomings of an outdated male Magisterium that so far seems determined to ignore everything that women tell them.

Soline, she points out, has endured decades of “being rebuffed, ignored, labelled, stereotyped, as if God only talks to clerics and like them has no time for women as equals.”

Those of us who have already had the pleasure of hearing Mary at one of our previous evenings or Synods, will be delighted at the opportunity to enjoy her wisdom, her common sense and her warmth again.
