Presider’s Page for 5 June (Ordinary Time 10)
Opening Comment
God’s power is absolute: God is not defeated by death. Jesus shows divine power in today’s Gospel, raising the widow’s son from the dead. We celebrate this compassion and pray for the grace to imitate it.
Penitential Rite
The grace of God raises us from our sins, which we now recall (pause)
Lord Jesus, you raise us to new life: Lord, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you forgive us our sins: Christ, have mercy.
Lord Jesus, you feed us with your body and blood: Lord, have mercy.
Opening Prayer (1998 ICEL Missal)
O God,
our very breath, our only hope,
in every age you take pity on us
and bring forth life from death.
Visit your people
and raise your Church to new life,
that we may join with all generations
in voicing our wonder and praise.
We make our prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Introduction to Scripture Readings
1 Kings 17:17-24 Elijah raises a boy from death, much as Jesus did at Nain. His ministry as a prophet is vindicated by this action.
Galatians 1:11-19 The second reading is from Galatians for all of June this year. Paul wrote this letter to a community who had been led astray. In this reading he establishes his credentials as a true apostle.
Luke 7:11-17 The only son of a widow is being brought out to be buried. In raising the boy to life, Jesus gives the widow back her hope.
BIDDING PRAYERS
Introduction by Presider: We turn to the Lord who listens and has pity…
- That Christians may believe that God has power to free souls from death (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
- That all who grieve may be consoled (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
- That parents who mourn the loss of a child may always have support (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
- That poor and lonely people may find friendship (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
- That young people beginning State Exams this week may be well prepared (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
- That people who are sick may be healed by God’s power (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
The presider prays for the dead, naming those who have a special claim on the community’s prayers (pause): that God may raise them up and turn mourners’ hearts from sadness to joy (we pray in our hearts for this). Lord, hear us.
Conclusion by Presider: Lord our God, you graciously change mourning into dancing, so great is your love for us. Listen to our prayers, and come to our help, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
Look kindly, Lord, upon our worship and praise,
that our offering may be acceptable to you
and cause us to grow in your love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
PREFACE (Sundays in Ordinary Time IV)
It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
holy Father, almighty and eternal God,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
His birth brought the human race a new beginning;
by his suffering he wiped away our sins;
by rising from the dead he opened the way to eternal life;
and by his ascension to you, Father, he unlocked the gates of heaven.
And so we join the throng of saints and angels
as they sing the unending hymn of your praise: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER III
Lord, you are holy indeed,
and all creation rightly gives you praise.
All life, all holiness comes from you
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
by the working of the Holy Spirit.
From age to age you gather a people to yourself,
so that from the rising of the sun to its setting
a pure offering may be made
to the glory of your name.
And so, Lord God, we humbly pray:
by the power of your Spirit sanctify these gifts
we have brought before you,
that they may become the body + and blood
of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
at whose command we celebrate this eucharist.
On the night he was handed over to death,
he took bread and gave you thanks and praise;
he broke the bread,
gave it to his disciples, and said:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT IT:
THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.
When supper was ended, he took the cup;
again he gave you thanks and praise,
gave the cup to his disciples, and said:
TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT:
THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD,
THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND EVERLASTING COVENANT.
IT WILL BE SHED FOR YOU AND FOR ALL,
SO THAT SINS MAY BE FORGIVEN.
DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.
The mystery of faith…..
Calling to mind, Lord God
the death your Son endured for our salvation,
his glorious resurrection and ascension into heaven,
and eagerly awaiting the day of his return,
we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.
Look with favour on your Church’s offering
and see the Victim by whose sacrifice
you were pleased to reconcile us to yourself.
Grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son
may be filled with his Holy Spirit
and become one body, one spirit in Christ.
Let him make us an everlasting gift to you,
that we may share in the inheritance of your saints,
with Mary, the virgin Mother of God,
with the apostles, the martyrs,
[Saint N.], and all your saints,
on whose constant intercession we rely for help.
Lord, may this sacrifice
which has made our peace with you
advance the peace and salvation of all the world.
Strengthen in faith and love your pilgrim Church on earth:
your servant Pope Francis, our Bishop N.,
all bishops, priests, and deacons,
all ministers of your Church,
and the entire people your Son has gained for you.
Merciful Father,
hear the prayers of the family you have gathered here before you,
and unite to yourself all your children
now scattered over the face of the earth.
Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters
and all who have left this world in your friendship.
We hope to enjoy with them your everlasting glory,
through Christ our Lord,
through whom you give the world everything that is good.
THROUGH HIM…..
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
Grant in your mercy, Lord,
that your healing power in the eucharist
may rid us of waywardness and sin
and lead us to all that is right and good.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
