The National Catholic Reporter carries a robust editorial on Cardinal Ouellet’s response to Archbishop Viganò. It challenges the role of those U.S. catholics “whose primary ambition, it seems, is to convince the rest of us that the Christian Gospel was actually promulgated to justify the most extreme expressions of American-style capitalism.”
It concludes “The work ahead will require more than bluster and misappropriated slogans. It will require accessing the deepest levels of our sacramental tradition. It will require the imposition of unprecedented accountability from bishops. It will also require bishops with the will to confront the toughest questions about how the clerical culture arrived at this point.”

Work of Catholic priests lauded in the Seanad…
Nice to see this from Senator Joe O’Reilly in the Senate, prompted by the tragic death of Eden Heaslip and the role of Fr Murphy, a case where tragically a case of extreme bullying included some sectarianism. It needs to be said that there are so many good priests doing great work all the time, taking on greater burdens as they get older with shortage of priests a major issue. Since Covid we have become accustomed to viewing church services online including many funeral services. Priests do a good job here and are a comfort to the bereaved, I know with so many deaths it’s not easy for them to cope with them all, but they somehow manage to do it well, in fact I think this is where they are at their best.T he role of the priest is still a unique treasured part of Irish life and long may it continue.
