Brendan Hoban tells us in his Western People column that bishop of Rome “Francis is 78, and might be dismissed as ‘an ageing, disillusioned priest’ – but he knows the score. I would argue that Francis and the ACP are singing out of the same hymn-sheet, even if others seem determined to drown out our voices.”
The National Catholic Reporter carries a story of Cardinal Reinhard Marx’s call for a change of the requirement of celibacy for priests as the German bishops’ conference prepares for a workshop debate to “review” the issue.
“Marx said the church must, “in light of the failure” surrounding the clergy sex abuse crisis, modify tradition in response to changing modern times.”
In his weekly Western People column Brendan Hoban discusses the RTE ‘Meaning of Life’ programme following a recent edition featuring Stephen Fry.
Brendan marvels that ‘in a country immersed in religion, it’s quite extraordinary how few seem to have given little more than a passing thought to the meaning of their lives – and how many still imagine that God is some version of Fry’s caricature, notwithstanding huge unanswered (and probably unanswerable) questions about the problem of evil and suffering in the world.’

Nice to see this from Senator Joe O’Reilly in the Senate, prompted by the tragic death of Eden Heaslip and the role of Fr Murphy, a case where tragically a case of extreme bullying included some sectarianism. It needs to be said that there are so many good priests doing great work all the time, taking on greater burdens as they get older with shortage of priests a major issue. Since Covid we have become accustomed to viewing church services online including many funeral services. Priests do a good job here and are a comfort to the bereaved, I know with so many deaths it’s not easy for them to cope with them all, but they somehow manage to do it well, in fact I think this is where they are at their best.T he role of the priest is still a unique treasured part of Irish life and long may it continue.
