Séamus Ahearne: Donald J Trump V Pope Leo Bob Prevost

Donald J Trump V Pope Leo Bob Prevost
I smiled. It was an uneven fight. One is calm, thoughtful and precise. The other is loud, explosive and vitriolic. Their weapons are very different. Both might claim infallibility. One is convinced of his own infallibility, and no one should ever dare to differ from him. The other speaks carefully, and doesn’t need any notion of infallibility to protect him.
Yes. I smiled. The Donald was elected. (Even if he doesn’t respect Election results or Judicial decisions.) The Americans should be ashamed of themselves! They have afflicted the world with this very loose cannon. He claims obeisance from everyone. Keir Starmer let him down. Georgia Meloni let him down. And now the Pope. The narcissist Donald cannot believe, that anyone could think differently from himself, as he looks at himself in the mirror. There is only Donald looking back at him and confirming everything he says.
Bob is a gentleman. That is most infuriating for Donald. Bob thinks before he speaks. He sees the effect of Trump’s bluster and impulsiveness. He has eyes for the suffering of too many. He shows no fear. He sets out to puncture the self-righteousness of the Donald. Leo won’t get excited. He won’t back down. He won’t be intimidated.
Leo’s words must also cut deep with all those religious people who voted for Trump and saw him as the man to protect life. Donald may notice (if he is alert to anything or anyone), that some of his religious supporters may think again. I do feel some concern for JD Vance, a recent Catholic. He has to support his boss but he also feels the need to tell the Pope what he should be doing and to wag a finger at him. That too is amusing.
Some have wondered why Bob/Leo has been so quiet over the months. Many felt he was too cautious. Francis was missed. Well Leo is not reticent. He likes to think things out. He won’t be rushed. He won’t be annoyed. He won’t be provoked, but he will speak. He is a dangerous opponent. It was rather funny to see Leo releasing a bird for peace in Cameroon. Now he had shortly before called out the tyrants! While Donald was circulating an image of himself as Christ.
