On 2nd June, 2012, Fr Derek Reeve, along with six other priests, wrote a letter to The Tablet, which was published under the heading A Call To Action. In it, they lamented that amongst our bishops  “there seems a reluctance to listen to the people whose lived reality is so often at odds with the teaching of the institutional Church.”

The response from the laity, when an open meeting was called, knocked them for six. ACTA, A Call to Action, was born, with the purpose of encouraging laity and bishops to dialogue.

This coming Friday evening, we are delighted to welcome Derek, one of the Magnificent Seven, as the priests informally became known, to a relaxed and enlightening evening with Root & Branch.

It takes a great deal of courage for priests to speak out when they can no longer remain silent. Last month we heard from Fr Augustine Vattoly of Kerala, who has also risked much to speak the truth as he sees it. Before him, we were graced by Fr Tony Flannery, and others who have suffered through the Church’s response. Let us not undervalue the empathy and support from friends when you feel isolated  and shut down by the organisation you thought was behind you.
