“Thank you to the women who wrote into Gay over the years and made Ireland a better place to live in. Thank you to Gay for listening to them”. Can the Irish Synod do the Gay Byrne on it??? and really listen to what people are saying on the ground as opposed to “applying Church teaching pastorally”!!!
#1 Roy, you are so right. Wouldn’t Gay Byrne have been the perfect chair for the National Synodal Assembly? Perhaps Catherine Day from the efficient and effective Citizens Assembly might fill the role?
The one outstanding memory I have of the letters being read out in Gay Byrne’s radio programme is as follows:
A mother-to-be expecting a baby told the story of how her husband had arranged a big celebration party for the birth of their baby which in his mind was going to be a boy. The Mother-to-be gave birth to a baby girl and the big celebration party was duly cancelled. This was mysoginistic as it showed his mindset to be more appreciative of the birth of a son than the birth of a daughter. It was also a humiliation for his wife and his baby daughter.
