Positioned on the margins of systems of power, the prophet is identified with, on the one hand, giving voice to the pain and fragility of such systems while, on the other hand, holding out a deep hope and belief in the values of the reign of God. From their own marginalised position – and continuing the prophetic legacy of many women in both the scriptures and in church tradition – many Catholic women are a prophetic presence in today’s church.
In this rescheduled talk, Gráinne Doherty will explore both the isolation and the power of women’s prophetic witness and voice in, and to, the Catholic church.
Dr. Gráinne Doherty works in pastoral ministry, adult faith formation, and facilitation. Prior to becoming self-employed, Gráinne was part of the Theology department in All Hallows College (Dublin) for many years, while also working in pastoral leadership at both parish and diocesan level. Her Veritas publication Joy of Love: A Family Perspective (2018) is a book of spiritual reflections and prayers which situates the writings of Pope Francis in the reality of family experience today.
