He quotes Archbishop Diarmud Martin in saying that the church ‘has to find a new language to get its message across, particularly to young people, and that if teaching isn’t expressed in terms of love then the Church has got it wrong.’
Gerry concludes that ‘Archbishop Martin and his colleagues here in Ireland – and further afield – need to take up with energy and enthusiasm the challenge of Pope Francis for a more collegial and dialogical church, in which the voice of all is heard. Thank you all for taking this initiative – it’s long overdue. Our political leaders have failed us by failing to stand up to the evils of the Israeli regime. We need pro-life, pro-peace, moral and courageous leadership – like Pope Leo VIV. The Bishops’ Conference should issue a pastoral letter – to be read out at all Masses, so that the faithful know there is a moral compass in our society, and that Catholics support the rights of the people of Palestine. We also need to reiterate that the present-day Israeli state is not the Israel that’s referenced in the Bible, and that all peoples have rights and are equal in the sight of God.
