The Ignatian ethos of finding God in the everyday shines through in the May Messenger: forPeter McVerry SJ, the sacred is to be found among those who do their best to make the lives of others more fulfilling; Trish Ennis, writes that St Joseph’s story shows us that holiness often looks ordinary;  and Gerry O’Hanlon SJ describes Pentecost as the call, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, for each member of the Church, lay and ordained, to be part of the move to rejuvenate the Church.

The May Messenger also features an interview with the inspirational Sr Orla Treacy CJ for whom the Church is not only about sacraments, but the people we accompany – the wounded, the dispossessed, the poor. She talks about finding moments of gratitude in each day, a sentiment echoed by Margaret Naughton who observes that as well as negativity and loneliness in life, there is also much to celebrate and give thanks for.

Questions are also asked about our national and global response to climate change and its impact on our lives and our world.  John Sweeney ponders what our answer will be when God asks us if we have cared for and cultivated our world and its peoples. Ciara Murphy writes that we need to rethink our relationship with water as flooding increases and look to more nature-based solutions. And the Pope’s call to prayer for the month is that everyone may have food, in a world unevenly hit by the poverty and deprivation brought about by drought.
