VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Here is the CNS translation of the prayer for peace Pope Francis recited at his weekly general audience March 16.
The prayer was composed by Archbishop Domenico Battaglia of Naples.

 

Forgive us for the war, Lord.

Lord Jesus, son of God, have mercy on us sinners.

Lord Jesus, born under the bombs of Kyiv, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, dead in the arms of a mother in Kharkiv, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, in the 20-year-olds sent to the frontline, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus, who continues to see hands armed with weapons under the shadow of the cross, forgive us, Lord.

Forgive us if, not content with the nails with which we pierced your hand, we continue to drink from the blood of the dead torn apart by weapons.

Forgive us if these hands that you had created to protect have been turned into instruments of death.

Forgive us, Lord, if we continue to kill our brother.
Forgive us, Lord, if we continue to kill our brother, if we continue like Cain to take the stones from our field to kill Abel.

Forgive us if we go out of our way to justify cruelty, if, in our pain, we legitimize the cruelty of our actions. Forgive us the war, Lord.

Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, we implore you to stop the hand of Cain.

Enlighten our conscience, let not our will be done, do not abandon us to our own doing.
Stop us, Lord, stop us.

And when you have stopped the hand of Cain, take care of him also. He is our brother.

O Lord, stop the violence.

Stop us, Lord.

Amen.

 

APPELLO E PREGHIERA PER L’UCRAINA

Cari fratelli e sorelle,

nel dolore di questa guerra facciamo una preghiera tutti insieme, chiedendo al Signore il perdono e chiedendo la pace.
Pregheremo una preghiera scritta da un Vescovo italiano.

 

Perdonaci la guerra, Signore.

Signore Gesù Cristo, Figlio di Dio, abbi misericordia di noi peccatori.

Signore Gesù, nato sotto le bombe di Kiev, abbi pietà di noi.

Signore Gesù, morto in braccio alla mamma in un bunker di Kharkiv, abbi pietà di noi.

Signore Gesù, mandato ventenne al fronte, abbi pietà di noi.

Signore Gesù, che vedi ancora le mani armate all’ombra della tua croce, abbi pietà di noi!

Perdonaci Signore, perdonaci, se non contenti dei chiodi con i quali trafiggemmo la tua mano, continuiamo ad abbeverarci al sangue dei morti dilaniati dalle armi.

Perdonaci, se queste mani che avevi creato per custodire, si sono trasformate in strumenti di morte.

Perdonaci, Signore, se continuiamo ad uccidere nostro fratello, perdonaci se continuiamo come Caino a togliere le pietre dal nostro campo per uccidere Abele.

Perdonaci, se continuiamo a giustificare con la nostra fatica la crudeltà, se con il nostro dolore legittimiamo l’efferatezza dei nostri gesti.

Perdonaci la guerra, Signore. Perdonaci la guerra, Signore.

Signore Gesù Cristo, Figlio di Dio, ti imploriamo! Ferma la mano di Caino!

Illumina la nostra coscienza,

non sia fatta la nostra volontà,

non abbandonarci al nostro agire!

Fermaci, Signore, fermaci!

E quando avrai fermato la mano di Caino, abbi cura anche di lui. È nostro fratello.

O Signore, poni un freno alla violenza!

Brendan Hoban writing in the Western People argues that as long as Bishops don’t listen to people and priests “we (as church) relegate ourselves to the sidelines because we present ourselves as controlling and demanding, refusing to listen or engage with the issue.”
Brendan also suggests that there is a crying need for competent church people to be used to communicate effectively with media and public. “Not every bishop is blessed with the ability to think on his feet or to manage the combination of words that does justice to what he wants to say.”

With the first Sunday of the Word of God coming up on 26 January, Pádraig McCarthy has produced a leaflet to encourage people to read Scripture, with some simple introductory notes, and a list of the Sunday readings for the current year. Pádraig is very happy to make it available for download on our ACP website.
