Eight years ago Tony Flannery was withdrawn from his ministry by his religious congregation, the Redemptorists, under orders from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF). The CDF took issue with some of his writings, saying they were heretical. He was forbidden to perform priestly duties, or to write any articles or to give interviews.

Since then he has had a greater degree of freedom of thought and action. From the Outside is the result. Dealing with the challenges facing the Church the book goes much deeper and also deals with Church doctrine. Many fundamental Church doctrines date from the early centuries of Christianity. This book outlines what needs to be changed, both in the content and language of doctrine, and in the images and metaphors used. Change is needed.

Thanks for a very interesting meeting. Tony and Tom were thrillingly eloquent.

Zoom is a stilted medium but has the amazing side effect of putting people who live at the edge of the world on an equal footing with those on the spot in Dublin. Let’s hope Zoom and other such apps thrive and open up unheard of possibilities of exchange and debate!

Unfortunately I was only able to join for a short time due to family commitments but at least I now have a face to go with the great mind –Joe — and great to see Séan too and Angela, Jo and many others. I looked for Eddie but I don’t think he was there –if “there” is the correct word. Perhaps “on” might be more accurate.

We should find reasons to do this more often.

I have just realised there was a fee –5euros –which I now must pay, Liamy.

    Good night and God bless.

PS. Really looking forward to reading Tony’s book.

Just realised that the audio is now available too so I can now watch it all at my leisure. Many thanks for making that possible.

I might see Eddie after all!!
