‘America’ magazine responds to Joe Biden as President-Elect

From the beginning of his campaign, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. framed his quest for the White House as “a battle for the soul of the nation.” After a period of vote-counting that continued into the weekend, Mr. Biden and his supporters won that battle, with voters electing him the nation’s 46th president, according to projections from the Associated Press. A lifelong Catholic who attended Mass on the morning of Election Day, Mr. Biden will be just the second Catholic to hold the presidency at a time when the Catholic Church in the United States, like the nation more broadly, remains bitterly divided.

ACP website editor’s (much less serious) note: Great rejoicing in Mayo with Joe Biden’s win. His great-great-great-grandfather Edward Blewitt and wife Mary left Ballina for the USA during the Great Hunger. Joe Biden, a regular visitor to Ireland, performed the sod-turning for the new Mayo-Roscommon Hospice in Castlebar in 2017. Mr Biden’s son Beau died of cancer in 2015. After the event Mr Biden was presented with a Mayo Jersey.

    Liamy, Brendan and all you Blewitt mongers of Mayo, you’ve really blown it and should go to the back of the queue. All the Finnegans of North Louth, South Armagh and South Monaghan will be in the Oval Office before you. Not only was his ma a Finnegan but his grand-daughter is the only girl on the planet with Finnegan as a Christian name. Now who, even in Ballina, could imagine a President’s grandchild called Blewitt Biden?
