New Year Plea to End War

Statement from the Association of Catholic Priests

The reality of the war in Gaza continuing right through Christmas must have been somewhere in the minds of most people, even at the height of the season’s celebrations.

In the minds of priests, it would have been almost impossible to shut out the clamour of war, as we celebrated the Eucharist, that great act of peace and joy. The incongruity was more pointed during the feast when we welcomed the Prince of Peace into the world in ritual and song, the constant news of destruction and death seemed almost to make a mockery of what we were doing.

As we sang the hymns: Silent night, Holy night, all is calm, all is bright — there was no calm in Bethlehem this Christmas. Angels we have heard on high — what came from on high were not angels, but drones containing deadly bombs.

Pope Francis is clear, war is evil, there is no justification for what is happening.

Every human person is a child of God, containing within them the Spirit of the Divine. To wantonly kill people is, in a real sense, killing the Divine Presence in the world. This applies to all sides of all military conflicts. 

Speaking on behalf of the Association of Catholic Priests we say as clearly and definitively as we can: War is evil; the agents of war are acting on behalf of evil.

War does not solve problems, it only deepens hatred, division, enmity, and becomes the seedbed of future wars. The war in Gaza, the war in Ukraine, and the many wars around the world, must cease now.

In the name of God, in the name of humanity, let there be an end to war now. In these words, we are re-echoing the words of Pope Paul VI when he addressed the United Nations.

In the name of the Child of Bethlehem, in the name of Jesus, let there be peace.

Diarmuid Martin  Archbishop of Dublin, spoke recently at Saint Michael’s Church of Ireland, Limerick, on the ‘The Church of the Future’. His words have been widely reported and are on the Dublin Diocese’s website.

In rejecting a version of Catholicism that diminished human freedom, led to outrageous scandal and that in retrospect is now seen to have diminished people and Church, Irish society seems intent on categorising religion and spirituality as unacceptable, irrelevant, even dangerous in a civilised society.

For the love of God (literally), stay home, be safe and pray

Daniel P Horan in the NCR writes on the closure of churches and the suspension of public acts of worship in this time of pandemic.
“we are all called upon to care for one another by taking extraordinary measures that includes the suspension of public worship, means learning to see our love of neighbor not only as an assent to “worldly” or “secular” medical wisdom, but also an actual exercise of our love of God. Each of the manifold ways we are sacrificing to love our neighbors — self-isolation, quarantining, tending to the sick at home, supporting first responders, avoiding public places, not hoarding supplies, working remotely and even not going physically to church buildings — is itself an expression of our love of God.”

    Thank you ACP for this plea which expresses the cry from many hearts as we witness the ongoing terrible devastation, pain and suffering of so many people, including new-born babies and children. War is hell on earth. Blessed are the peacemakers. Let us commit ourselves wholeheartedly to the work of peace.

    The safety of the children of Israel is incompatible with the injustices suffered by the Palestinians of Gaza and the West Bank – injustices that the government and people of Israel have the power to end.

    If Israel has a right to exist as a state, so do Palestinians have the right to full legal equality within Israel or within their own self-governing state. If Israelis cannot trust an independent Palestinian state not to harbour some kind of Hamas, bent upon their destruction, they must be persuaded to accept some kind of international presence there, to prevent that.

    The right of self-protection cannot include the right to dominate others: to even think that way is to guarantee the recovery of Hamas, whatever level of destruction of Hamas the IDF can accomplish.
