Brendan you are spot on but how can bishops give a stronger lead on this? How can we grow corresponsibility? The clergy are still gatekeepers of others ministries.

Father Brendan has dramatically illustrated the critical crisis that exists for the Church to provide ordained priests for the future. There are a number of ways the shortage may be tackled. Ordained Deacons should be allowed to go forward for ordination to the priesthood irrespective of whether they are single or married. Some Priests should be allowed to have outside employment to support themselves and be available at weekends and possibly a few evenings a week to serve the people. Priestly celibacy should not be compulsory, it should be the choice of the candidate for ordination. It is important for bishops to think outside the box and rely on the Holy Spirit for inspiration and guidance. The possibility of ordination to the priesthood for women must be considered, the prime requirement being a vocation to serve.

Thank you Séamus, I too didn't know about Eddie's death. I only knew him through his frequent and very learned contributions on the website. It is good to know a bit more about the man. I am sure he is now enjoying more debating in Heaven, with other erudite contributors...and maybe even a few pesky women!

I was sorry to hear of Pádraig's death. He became a member of the Irish group BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) which pursued equality for women in the church, including ordination. It wasn’t a very popular option in the mid 90's after Ordinatio Sacerdatolis! I am sure that Pádraig got a great welcome from his patron Saint, Saint Patrick: Pádraig did a lot to make him better known and accessible to a large public, producing a very readable, accurate translation of Patrick's Confession (Royal Irish Academy 2011). I treasure my copy with Pádraig's words of dedication. May he enjoy the fullness of eternal life.
