Sean is right. A la carte Catholicism and Cafeteria Catholicism are formations dating from late 1960s. Radical agnosticism and radical questioning, if you ask even the elderly -- or perhaps especially the elderly -- for their intimate religious conviction may be found to go deep into the texture of Catholicism in Ireland now.

In their statement of August 5th, explaining their preference for mediation, the Christian Brothers do not explain why they do not nominate just one person to receive legal proceedings on their behalf. They could perhaps take this opportunity to do that - to strengthen the case for mediation as a preferential option?

Is that complex picture not made even more complex by the fact that Ireland itself - the 'cultural matrix' - has not been standing still while the Irish Catholic church has been so challenged - and is now fully and consciously part of a globalised ecological crisis brought about by the very same secular forces that have upended the church - especially a media and digital revolution that now makes many despair of the future? ‘I firmly believe we are in the last days of the Anthropocene’ says actor Olwen Fouéré to the Irish Times this week - giving voice to a fear that now makes many question the wisdom of having children. This is a very far cry from the Irish mood of 1968, when Humanae Vitae arrived. That was a product of the very same Catholic moral universe that gave us Mother and Baby Homes and Magdalen Laundries - and a clerical omerta on our clergy's own sexual secrets. We haven't yet come to an articulate moralism that can freely name the sin at the root of all institutional cover-ups, but there could be no strong Irish Catholic lobby now for reverting to that particular mindset - so surely in that respect at least 'traditional' Irish Catholicism is irrecoverable? Just as the era - and secular power - of Archbishop John Charles McQuaid could not now be recreated, neither can the very peculiar Irish Catholicism that saw his attitudes and practices as definitively Catholic? Secular media have replaced the clerical Catholic Church as the dominant brokers of honour and shame in Irish society - so in that respect at least 'Catholic Ireland' is irreversibly over. Who can't see an obvious corollary - the need to reframe 'sin' more in terms of 'superiorism' than sexuality? We were always on a 'learning curve' but now, surely, we know we should be able to name the capital sin that dominates the outrageous global 'attention economy'?

We Catholics have beautiful outer traditions but we are suffering from a drought of authentic interior conversion.
