    14 June 2026 – 11th Sunday, (A)

    June 14 2026
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: Jesus is still searching for shepherds. Can you be the one He is looking for? Homily: Testimony: "While I go for my morning walk, I keep blessing all the houses I see, the communities. I know my Jesus will hear my prayers and bless everyone!!" - I felt that a good shepherd is going for a walk around her flock. Today's Gospel gives us a beautiful glimpse into the compassionate heart of our Lord Jesus. Our Lord Jesus Christ sees the crowds. He sees their struggles, confusion, lack of knowledge, not knowing what to do next, longing for a direction and consolation. And the Gospel says: "He had compassion for them." Notice that Jesus does not first see their sins. He did not brand them saying, "You are an addict", or "you are wasting your time and money". He understands the root cause behind their current state. He understands that they need a shepherd to guide them in the right way. And His Sacred Heart is moved with compassion for them. Our Lord Jesus who looked at those crowds two thousand years ago is looking at our world today. And what does our Lord see? He sees people who are anxious, struggling in marriages, young people trapped in addictions, children growing up without guidance, elderly parents feeling abandoned, people smiling outside but crying inside... Above all, people who are not aware that they are children of the Almighty Father, who cares for them, who longs for them, who wants to shelter them under His mighty wings!! So our Lord Jesus says, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few." There are countless hearts waiting for encouragement and experiencing God's love. Global data indicates that roughly 33% of people experience loneliness, and about 16% face severe social isolation, correlating closely to this lack of direction and connection. Our Lord Jesus is still looking for Shepherds: When we hear the word "shepherd," we immediately think of priests, bishops, and religious. The Church desperately needs holy priests and religious. But today I believe Jesus is asking a deeper question. "Who will be My shepherd in your family?" "Who will be My shepherd in your workplace?" "Who will be My shepherd among your friends?" Because every one of us has been entrusted with a flock of sheep. A mother is a shepherd to her children, a father to his family, a teacher to students, an older sibling to younger sibling... So you have already been allocated your flock of sheep. Are you a good shepherd to them? Little Thérèse of the Child Jesus once prayed intensely for a condemned criminal named Henri Pranzini, who showed no sign of repentance. She asked for proof to her Infant Jesus that her first spiritual child has repented. When Thérèse heard this, she rejoiced. On the day of his execution, just before his death, he unexpectedly took a crucifix and kissed the wounds of Christ three times. She realized that her hidden prayers had borne fruit. What does this teach us? It teaches us that shepherding is not always visible. Little Thérèse entered the convent when she was 15 years of age. Then she never left the convent. But she is called as patroness of missions and Doctor of the Church. She has seen only a little bit of sky but she has saved countless souls. Just through her prayer and sacrifice. A mother praying the Rosary for her children is shepherding. A father teaching his family to trust God is shepherding. When we invite someone who feels lonely, abandoned, that is also shepherding. Think about what our sweet Mamma Mary will do, if She sees a person who is feeling unwanted and lonely. She will immediately spend time with them and show them her love and care. And then our Mamma Mary will sweetly plead to her Son, "Take care of them Jesus". We can also do the same. As Mother Teresa says, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." When we see the world through eyes of love as Saint Mother Teresa, we can immediately recognise what the other person needs. Usually helping will be quick and not require much effort. It will be within our reach. But looking at people with a heart of compassion takes effort. To become a good shepherd, we need a heart filled with compassion for our people!! Not all shepherds stand at pulpits. Some stand in kitchens, some in classrooms, some in offices, some beside hospital beds, and some kneel quietly before the Blessed Sacrament. Like Little Thérèse you may never know how many souls your prayers, sacrifices and acts of love will bring to Christ. But one day in heaven, you will discover that the little acts of love you offered became a path leading many sheep back to the Good Shepherd.

Synodal Pathway responds to the recent Irish Catholic editorial

    June 11 2026
    Joe O'Leary
How does one implement a vision of church renewal? I suggest that it might be a good idea to organize a massive preaching campaign, allowing those who are qualified to explain synodality and its practical implications, both lay and clerical, female and male, to usurp the Sunday pulpits and proclaim this good news.

Statement of the Summer 2026 General Meeting of the Irish Bishops’ Conference

    June 10 2026
    Sean O'Conaill
"Bishops shared the many ways in which synodality is becoming embedded in the life, structures, and practices of the Church in Ireland, and recognised the important role of Synodal Teams in guiding the evaluation process next year." Mustard seeds miraculously into mighty trees yet again, Joe - to which the birds of the air will undoubtedly flock? If it can happen in print - after a Conference of Irish Bishops - it must surely happen everywhere in reality? When I asked Copilot for a likely outline of the 'instrumentum laboris' for the October 2026 Synodal Assembly it predicted, among other sensations, a proposal to move responsibility for sacramental faith formation decisively onto families and parishes, ending the school-reliant system and building on the success of a family-led experimental model in Dublin! A final shattering of the time-honoured school-centred mould - not to mention the Irish Catholic Educational Establishment? When I challenged Copilot’s forecasting of Ireland’s first National Catholic Catechetical Directory - by pointing out that Ireland already had one - in ‘Share the Good News’ (2011) - it argued that our bishops must have agreed by now on the reasons that STGN had never been implemented - principally the lack of an ‘infrastructure’ for a parish-centred system - and that synodality must now be the vehicle through which that hurdle is to be surmounted. This must already be ‘blowing your mind’ - and poor Dermot’s as well - so I had better stop there to allow rest and recuperation for all! If you want to know what else Copilot might be predicting you can just ask.
