Thank you Seamus.. ordinary times indeed .. I find myself struggling to find the mustard seed .. going through the motions.. HC & the Confirmed etc ..(confirmed exit dead on the nail) .. remixing intolerable language.. trying to bring life’s experience to listening ears.. people of faith are extraordinary.

When Jesus recites ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord Our God is one’ he is proclaiming the ‘Shema Israel’, the ‘credo’ of every Jew. Our Christian Creed truly incorporates that credo also - adding to it our beliefs in God as a Trinity. Would it not help every Catholic to remember always what the essence of Jesus’s professed faith was, the ‘easy yoke’ and ‘light burden’ he spoke of? That would also help to combat Catholic antisemitism, for Jesus never stopped being a faithful Jew, observant of the totality of the law, as expressed in Mark 12.

Jesus's rebuke of the Pharisees for asking for a sign centred also on the story of Jonah: they would receive only 'the sign of Jonah' - i.e. the return after three days of another man 'thrown overboard'. René Girard, who argued that ancient culture centred on cycles of victimisation followed by ritual re-enactments in the form of religious human sacrifice, points to multiple occurrences of the theme of all-against-one in the Bible, of which the Jonah story is just one. Others include the selling of Joseph into slavery by his jealous brothers, the near stoning-to-death of Susanna in the book of Daniel, the ganging-up on Job by his 'comforters' and two in every three of the Psalms. René insisted on the uniqueness of the Bible accounts of God's solidarity with all victims. Just now Irish Catholicism is 'in the belly of the whale', learning slowly how to preach repentance (i.e. 'rethinking') to a society whose pundits have mostly consigned us to 'the dustbin of history'. Some hope!
