They said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” He said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘Doctor, cure yourself!’ And you will say, ‘Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'” And he said, “Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown.

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile.” For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Brendan Hoban: Voters are risk averse in general elections

    June 19 2026
    Robert McDonnell
Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are not the same conservative centrist parties that they were 30 years ago. Back then, they never would have supported the killing of babies in the womb for any reason in the first three months of pregnancy, nor supported the biological lie of trans ideology, whereas the far left would always support these themes. Today's progressive FG and FF have now shifted well left towards the likes of Sinn Féin, Soc Dems, Labour and PbP. This is clear from the vote in the Dáil last week on the SF motion to remove the 3-day waiting period for an abortion, which has saved the lives of 10,000 children since 2019. All the far left TDs voted to abolish the 3-day waiting period, and the death sentence on 2,000 unborn children per year in Ireland was confirmed by votes from FG and FF. All Independent Ireland TDs voted against the motion, as did Aontú. Personally, I could never support a party that facilitates the silent holocaust of the most vulnerable in our society, as I would feel complicit, even though my taxes are already used without my consent for this slaughter. In an election, choices are therefore limited to Aontú, some Independents and Independent Ireland, even though all their policies may not have appeal, these would get my number one in all elections, with no preferences to the others. In a hierarchy of basic human principles, the highest surely is the right to life.

    Does ‘Humanness’ Evolve’?

    June 17 2026

Both "The kingdom of God is at hand", of Mark 1:15 and "The kingdom of God is within you", of Luke 17:20-21 are contained here, in suggesting our being what you express as "capable of stupendous further growth", in entailing the potential in us to apprehend it, should we be pure enough and graced to exercise it?

    21 June 2026 – 12th Sunday, (A)

    June 21 2026
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: Acknowledge Jesus. And one day Jesus will acknowledge you before His Father in heaven. Homily: Testimony: "My daughter's teacher asked her in class (she is a toddler), what she likes most. I was wondering what she would answer since she loves her toys... Looks like she thought for a whole full minute and then she said, "My family". When my teacher told this to me, I was happy... I asked my little one later a similar question, she repeated the same answer. Then I asked her "Why". She told me, when I have you, I will have everything". I was wondering, has my heart ever trusted my Jesus, "When I have you, I will have everything, my dear Jesus..." There are few commands in the Gospel that our Lord Jesus repeats as often as these words: "Do not be afraid." In today's Gospel reading, our Lord repeats it. "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." "So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." Why does our Jesus speak so much about fear? Because He knows the human heart. He knows how easily we become afraid. We fear anything and everything. We fear losing our health, job, rejection, failure, what others think about us, our future, suffering... Fear has accompanied humanity since the fall of Adam and Eve. When sin entered the world, fear entered with it. The first words spoken by Adam after his sin were: "I was afraid." And ever since then, fear has been one of the devil's most effective weapons. But today our Jesus speaks directly into our fears. He reminds us that there is something greater than our worries, greater than our circumstances, and even greater than death itself. There is the loving providence of our Heavenly Father. St. Augustine once reflected that human beings spend much of their lives worrying about things that pass away while neglecting the one thing that lasts forever. We worry about the body and forget the soul, worry about earthly success and neglect eternal life. We become so anxious about what others think of us while forgetting what God thinks of us. That is why our Lord Jesus says: "Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul." The Lord is not telling us that suffering is unimportant. Rather, He is teaching us perspective. Everything in this world is temporary. Our possessions, achievements, even our earthly life is temporary. But our soul is eternal. And our soul is destined for God. Our soul has come from God. So it can rest only when it reaches God. Hence a wise person therefore spends more energy caring for the soul than protecting earthly comforts. Yet our Lord does not leave us with a warning. He immediately gives us a promise. He speaks about sparrows. In the marketplace of His day, sparrows were among the cheapest birds that could be purchased. They seemed insignificant and unnoticed. Yet our Jesus says: "Not one of them falls to the ground without your Father knowing it." Think about that. The God who governs galaxies notices a sparrow. Our God who created oceans notices a tiny bird. And if God notices a sparrow, how much more does He notice you? You are not forgotten. You are not one face among billions. Our Lord knows you personally. He knows the prayers you have never spoken aloud. In fact, our Jesus says: "Even the hairs of your head are all counted." When our Lord patiently counts the number of hairs on your head, won't he count the number of your tears and wipe them? Little Thérèse saw God as a loving Father bending over His child. In Story of a Soul, she often compared herself to a little child who could not climb the steep staircase of holiness on her own. She believed that she could approach Him with confidence, not fear. That is why she wrote in her bio: "It is confidence and nothing but confidence that must lead us to Love." How different our lives would be if we truly believed that. Many times we think God is waiting to punish us... No never. Little Thérèse lived as though God was waiting to embrace her. The reality is God is our loving Father, waiting to embrace us. But Jesus also gives us a mission. He says: "What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops." For a long time, I was not able to understand it. Then I realised it is two things: 1. Sharing our Testimony of blessings 2. Sharing the guidance we receive from the Holy Spirit. The love of Christ is too beautiful to keep to ourselves. Many people think proclaiming the Gospel means standing on a street corner with a microphone. It is just sharing our testimony of blessings we received. The greatest challenge in today's Gospel is not physical persecution but the subtle fear of being identified as followers of Christ. We live in a world where it is often easier to remain silent. Yet Jesus says: "Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven." The safest place in the world is not where there is no suffering, but where there is complete trust in the Father's love. The Lord who counts the hairs on your head will never stop watching over you. The Lord who notices every sparrow will never forget one of His children. Therefore, do not be afraid. Our Lord is asking for courage. The courage to pray, forgive, speak the truth. The world still exists because one person had the courage to live differently from the entire world at his time - Noah. There will be opposition when you speak the truth. But God will make you come out victoriously like Noah.

    Does ‘Humanness’ Evolve’?

    June 17 2026
    Sean O'Conaill
"If the divine is perceived exclusively as an external reality, human consciousness inevitably tends to project its search for meaning elsewhere. Artificial intelligence then runs the risk of becoming the new screen onto which religious aspirations that have remained without language are projected." Can anyone who sincerely prays be making the mistake of thinking of God ONLY as an external reality? Clearly Jesus did not, and nor did Paul who spoke of 'the Christ who lives in me'. That way of thinking and speaking repeated itself down the centuries - and I totally fail to see how the expansion of scientific knowledge has somehow privileged more recent generations in terms of Christian consciousness - specifically the capacity to love others with integrity and humility. Of all forms of hubris the daftest must be 'era hubris' - the notion that necessarily we today must be closer to God than the ancients - who didn't understand e.g. the laws of gravity, relativity or the enormity of the cosmos - and never even imagined AI. And who today, contemplating the phenomenon of Donald Trump or the destruction of Gaza and Lebanon, or what happened in Belfast in June 2026 on foot of Internet provocation, can believe that humankind as a species is evolving morally? Technology can as easily tip us into total barbarity as into some kind of universal fraternity - and probably the greatest danger we face is self-delusion about this. Teilhard's 'noosphere' as a concept is for me far more distant and 'transcendent' than the God to whom I pray - and the experience of suffering has taught me that the last books I will reach for in a crisis are on the one hand Dawkins' 'The God Delusion' and on the other Teilhard de Chardin's 'The Phenomenon of Man'. I simply don't need the latter - or, if it comes to that, and book whatever - to believe in the God who dwells within.
