    12 April 2026 – 2nd Sunday of Easter, (A)

    April 12 2026
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: Recall yesterday's miracles to receive future miracles!! Homily: Testimony: "A girl asked the mother of 5 year old twins, "Can you tell me the secret of your healthy and active children?" The mother replied, "When I was pregnant, I never worried for a moment. I gave all requirements to Jesus and trusted totally in Him. I was in peace always". Do these statements sound familiar in your mind? “Lord, if You fix this problem… then I will trust You.” “If I see a sign… then I will believe.” The Apostle Thomas doubted once. But we continuously doubt. We doubt all the time, even for a little uncomfortable change. In today's Gospel reading, our loving Lord Jesus appeared once again for the Apostle Thomas. It is the same in our lives too. Our miracles may get delayed. Others may get something that we have been waiting for years. It is only that our time is yet to come. When the appointed time comes, our Jesus will come!! Father Abraham received the gift of a child, 25 years after God had promised Him. For 25 years, Father Abraham's situation did not change. His wife Sarah did not believe in the promise. Both of them aged gradually. But Father Abraham trusted in God, even though he was able to see that both of them were not fit physically to have a child. He even did not lose his patience with God. He still had faith in God. So God was comfortable with Father Abraham and considered him as His own friend. God called him as His own friend because Abraham was faithful to trust in His promise. How do we trust in our Lord Jesus, in our challenging times? By remembering how God was faithful in keeping His earlier promises. Can we recall in our minds.. A time when things looked impossible… but something opened up. Something that opened up is only because our Lord is faithful to His promise "I AM WITH YOU ALWAYS!!" What is the rootcause for not believing? We remember our problems very well. But we forget our miracles. We forget how our sweet Jesus has carried us on His shoulders to cover the deepest valleys of our lives. Otherwise we couldn't have made it through. And then when a new problem comes… we panic. When Abraham climbed up the mountain to sacrifice his only son Isaac, did he also take a lamb to sacrifice as his backup plan? When his only son Isaac asked, "Daddy, where is the lamb to sacrifice?". Abraham told, "God will provide". And we all know what happened!! God showed a lamb on the mountain top to Abraham for the sacrifice. When Abraham was bringing his son Isaac on one side of the mountain, God was bringing a lamb on the other side of the mountain. Will our Almighty Father let us go out of His hands, when we are trusting Him? Practical tips: 1. Recall your past testimonies Write down 3 times God helped you. When fear comes, read them again. Or read them daily in the morning. 2. Speak faith, not fear Instead of saying “What will happen?” Say: “God has taken care of me before. He will do it again.” 3. Remove the backup mindset Decide: “I will trust God fully in this situation.” 4. Spend time with Jesus daily Even 5–10 minutes of prayer builds relationship. When praying do not use complicated words to our Lord Jesus. He is not assessing you. He is your friend. Speak with Him directly from your heart. 5. Receive Divine Mercy Today is Divine Mercy Sunday. Do not carry guilt. Come to our Jesus and be filled with His Mercy!!. The same sweet Jesus who helped you yesterday, last year, will come through again!!

Seán Ó Conaill: Violence in the Bible: A Motivational Pattern?

    April 6 2026
    Joe O'Leary
Another book that is much cited is Mark McEntire, The Blood of Abel: The Violent Plot in the Hebrew Bible (Mercer University Press, 1999). There is also Matthew J. DiStefano, From the Blood of Abel: Humanity's Root Causes of Violence and the Bible's Theological-Anthropological Solution (Quoir, 2016), which is explicitly Girardian, and gets this praise from James Allison: "Matthew Distefano offers us a robust and intriguing approach to the Gospel. Having had his Christianity restructured both by Girard's insights into violence, and by Becker's understanding of death, he makes available a much stronger and richer sense of what Jesus was about in undoing those things than so many approaches which pile quote upon quote, leaving readers at the mercy of their own violence. Those questioning received notions of hell, of wrath, and of an exclusive God will find solid food here." Freud warns against 'deriving something as complicated as religion from a single origin' at the start of the fourth essay in his Totem and Taboo ('The Infantile Return of Totemism'), which he considered one of his very best pieces, though the book is notorious. He adds that when psychoanalysis 'in a onesidedness driven by necessity and really a matter of duty wants to bring to recognition a single one of the sources of this institution, it is not claiming for it exclusivity nor the first rank among the factors that are working together.' Maybe Girard and Schwager might post similar warnings before their texts. .

Brendan Hoban: Tackling the growth of complaint culture

    April 6 2026
    Joe O'Leary
"Why am I still having to say this?!!" Because actual concrete cases are drowned in a mass-produced generic rhetoric that in the end just leaves people cold. https://www.jstor.org/stable/24347746 That generic rhetoric is trotted out against any resistance on behalf of common sense as well as when an accused individual defends himself or is defended by another. This applies particularly to the vicious propaganda against the nuns propagated in films such as The Magdalen Laundries and Philomena, which arouse emotions in viewers which they think to be virtuous emotions. "I also wonder if clergy today in their training are reminded, often, that Jesus, their master, was also falsely accused?" Priests, who have meditated so often on the first Station of the Cross, are conditioned to be like a lamb who before its shearers is dumb. I doubt if there was any instruction at all on their human and civil rights or on potential threats to these; or on how to defend them against threats coming from civil authority or against church authority.

Brendan Hoban: Tackling the growth of complaint culture

    April 6 2026

Somebody significant— can’t remember who now— once said “ Our sexuality is the primary font of our humanity “ But, Joe, we must never downplay the horrendous, life changing abuse so many children suffered —- the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and poorest children— suffered at the hands of priests, Christian Brothers and nuns. Why am I still having to say this?!! And, yes, I do know it happened in the family home too.
