Bishop Larry Duffy:…We must seek out the gifts of priesthood and ministry from other parts of our Church to help us here…

    August 18 2026
    Soline Humbert
These "other parts of the Church to help us here" are right under the bishops' noses... but there are none so blind as those who do not want to see! Women and the Catholic Church (Letter to the Irish Times,24th August) Sir, – As an octogenarian and a woman I continue to be amazed at the misogyny within the Church. The hierarchy it would appear prefer to recruit men from abroad to fill the shoes of our burnt-out and overworked elderly priests rather than stand together and demand the recognition of women and the impact they would bring to bear in so many ways. But then why am I surprised as the church refuses to move into the 21st century despite the hard work, compassion and understanding of so many priests for which I am grateful for? – Yours, etc, DEL Ó’ SULLIVAN, Listowel, Co Kerry.

    Studies – Irish Quarterly Review:

    August 20 2026
    Sean O'Conaill
Why also is 'the kingdom of God' conflated in that argument with the Heaven we can only enter after death - when Jesus insisted that this very same kingdom of God was 'at hand' - i.e. a present life experiential possibility - to do with the complete conscious realisation not only that Jesus WAS God - there present - but that through him the Father was and is present also - as HE ALWAYS HAS BEEN. ('I AM WHO AM'.)Jesus' insistent and copious teachings on the kingdom of God as 'at hand' become utterly pointless if we think of 'the kingdom' as identical to after-death 'Heaven'.For example, what on earth could be the point of the teaching on the equality of the labourers who come late to work in the vineyard if Jesus is not referring to adult receivers of 'water and the spirit' in this life, who arrive well after the original disciples but receive exactly the same reward - i.e, the same equal enjoyment of the presence of God and the same fellowship with Jesus NOW?That Jesus is referring to a conscious this-life ADULT experience of 'water and the spirit' in the Nicodemus dialogue is plain from a calm, considered reading of the WHOLE of John 3.If Jesus had believed that children who died before baptism could never get to after-death heaven why did he only ever spend time teaching adults - and why did he tell those same adults that unless they became LIKE children - (who were NEVER on any occasion in the New Testament receivers of baptism) - THEY could not enter the kingdom of heaven? (Matthew 18:3) Surely it was to the innocence and guilelessness of young pre-adolescent children - UNBAPTISED - that he was referring? When we pray 'Thy kingdom come' are we truly asking God to transport us to that after-death state right away - or for a transformation of the earth right away - through the full universal realisation of God's ever presence - and our own exactly equal status as beloved children of God - here and now?St Augustine of Hippo was undoubtedly a genius but on the necessity of infant baptism and the necessity of 'compelling to come in' the Donatists - i.e. persecuting them until they shouted 'stop' - he was catastrophically wrong. There is far too much dithering and delay in saying so. Just as Dignitatis Humanae (1965) is implicitly a clear rejection of 'compel them to come in' there needs to be far clearer teaching on the Kingdom of God as an ever-present possibility - if we we are to make clear sense of the Lord's prayer itself - and even grasp the import of "Dominus Vobiscum".What then of 'original sin'? Adam and Eve sinned AS ADULTS - dissatisfied with their status in comparison to God. Doesn't that same habit of invidious comparison, followed by ambition and 'pride', arrive also with adolescence? Where in the Bible are these proclivities attributed to children, let alone children in the womb?

    KIERAN O’MAHONY OSA

    August 18 2026
    Helen Kiely O'Regan
I am so sorry to hear about Fr Kieran's death. My friend Teresa Clarke (Finglas) told me when we were speaking earlier. I met Fr Kieran with my late husband, Michael O'Regan (Cork city) when we used to go to visit Nicholas OSA in John's lane in Dublin. Where I live in Co Leitrim, I often see passages in print in our local parish bulletin from Fr Kieran. My sincere condolences to you Fr Seamus and to the Augustinian province and to all Fr Kieran's family and friends. May he rest in peace in the arms of Our Lord 💖🙏✝️
