18th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Liturgy Preparation

Great wonders are proclaimed in today’s Liturgy. God’s love and God’s care for humanity are made manifest, and those who gather for Mass are invited to join in God’s feast.

    The secular roots of redemption

Leviticus 25 summarizes the sociological setting of ancient Israel. It states the secular context regulating land and family relationships, and roots these rights and obligations in Israel’s relationship to God. Another passage from this chapter, not cited today, gives the theological basis. Through

    Martha’s Faith (Fr Bill Dinga)

Today we celebrate the feast of St Martha, who was sister both to Mary and Lazarus. We recently heard in a gospel passage how Mary “chose the better part” when Jesus came to visit their home – “better part” being her close attentiveness to Jesus at his feet. But, this does not preclude Martha’s

    New Beginnings

Today we conclude the Book of Exodus, as important to the Old Testament as are the gospels to the New. We also conclude another of the major sections in Matthew’s gospel, on the reign or kingdom of God (Matthew 11:2–13:53). In these readings we find God’s merciful way of starting over

    Ready for Radical Choices?

At crucial transitions in our life, and certainly at the hour of death, we are obliged to exchange all our possessions for the pearl of great price. Then the challenge of Joshua to the Israelites in the drama of covenant renewal at Shechem is leveled at ourselves: Now, therefore,

    The Way of the Covenant

While the heart of the Mosaic Torah is found at Exodus chapters 19-24, there is a major theological commentary on it, in chaps. 32-34, which really provides the key to the entire Book of Exodus. Because the Way of the Covenant is a total way of life

    The Apostle James

James, son of Alphaeus is often identified with James the Less, who is only mentioned three times in the Bible, each time in connection with his mother. Mark 15:40 refers to “Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses”, while Mark 16:1 and Matthew 27:56 refer to “Mary, the mother of James”.

    Theme

Solomon prayed for the gift of discernment, something that we all need as our guide in making decisions. All things have their own intrinsic value, but if we over-value any of our favourite “things”, we devalue God. Deep down, I need to loosen my grip on what is transient, and hold firm to what is eternal, in the spirit of faith-filled discernment. I need to find what is the real treasure, the one thing really worth

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Liturgy Preparation

This summer Sunday, those who gather for worship rejoice in many gifts, including the promise that all will share in Christ’s glory. At Mass, they give thanks for these treasures, as they continue on the journey to the fullness of the kingdom of heaven.

What Bridget of Sweden can teach us today

(from an address of pope Benedict XVI in St Peter’s Square, October 28, 2010.)

I would like to present the figure of St Bridget of Sweden, co-patroness of Europe, her message, and the reasons why this woman has much to teach — even today — to the Church and to the world. We know well the events of her life, because

    Priveleged Moments

The Scriptures identify two different moments in our lives: first, as in Exodus we are fired with dreams and visions; later these early ideals become memories to inspire us anew and correct our meandering ways. Sometimes in the gospel God speaks to us plainly, at other times in riddles.

    Perseverance has its Reward

Today we begin reading from Jeremiah, one of the most influential prophets, whose impact on the popular piety of Israel was immense. The fame of Jeremiah probably explains why the book is textually so mixed up, between the Hebrew and its early Greek translation. A book that is in such

    The Wider Family Circle

The Exodus text and the final prayer in Micah both tell of Israel’s liberation and journey towards the promised land; and each stresses Israel’s separateness from all other nations. Matthew, on the contrary, sees Jesus forming a new family of outsiders, based on “whoever does the will of my Father.” This qualification

    Trust and Anxiety

How few of us are willing to really trust in God. We are like the Israelites, who after their release from Egypt were still fearful that God would abandon them in the desert. Unless they could see immediate solutions that did away with all risk, the people complained and put this bitter question to Moses:

The Spirit of Jesus helps us in our weakness; and God has sown the good seed in our hearts. We have all that we need to make our lives successful, with the help of the divine mercy. Press Release: ACP Response to Vatican Decision on Women Deacons

    December 11 2025
    Paddy Ferry
Alan, you obviously want to see our Church continue to decline. Some of us do not want that, hence we support the idea of synodality.

    14 Dec 2025 – 3rd Sunday in Advent, A – Gaudete Sunday

    December 14 2025
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: His way is His will!! Homily: Testimony: My mother who is in her 80's is staying alone in a house. She is taken care of by a maid who lives close by. The maid was telling my mother, "I have 3 daughters whom I have taken care of and brought them up well. Now they are all well settled and financially sound. My husband does not respect me and keeps cursing me. My daughters keep asking for money from me. Though I am working for them, I continue only to be an ATM (any time money) machine to their eyes. But when I come to you, I feel your warmth and love. I feel respected and welcomed. God has given you as the consolation for my weary heart". In today’s Gospel, we see that John the Baptist who had boldly proclaimed Jesus as the “Lamb of God”, now sends his disciples from prison to ask our Jesus a question: “Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?” Our Lord Jesus gives them evidence as a reply, instead of a direct 'yes' or 'no' as St. John expected, and then finally announces a profound blessing, "Blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.” Have you ever prayed… and then waited… and waited… and nothing seemed to change? Are you feeling that you are in the wilderness? That’s where we meet our John the Baptist today not in the wilderness, but in a prison. Now he is not proclaiming boldly, but he is asking questions. Even the greatest prophet experienced doubt, darkness and uncertainty. And yet our Lord Jesus does not scold John the Baptist. He answers with compassion and reminds him saying, "I am still at work; Miracles are happening; My kingdom is advancing..." Here our Lord Jesus is asking both John the Baptist and us to trust in Him, when there are no direct answers. He answers in small instances of life even though we are not able to see the full picture of whatever is happening. Our Takeaways: 1. Like John the Baptist, we may be expecting an immediate "YES" or "NO" answer, but our Lord Jesus reveals to us that His kingdom grows quietly, through mercy, healing and His word. Likewise we are in the process of getting our answers quietly and gently, through His mercy, His healing and His word. So today if your heart is heavy with delay or silence... Remember that our Lord Jesus is still working, but may not be in the way we expect. 2. Our Lord Jesus testified that St. John the Baptist is the greatest born. This says that even the greatest grow weary and our Jesus still calls them great!! So even if you feel weary and feel small in your eyes, you are still great in our loving Father's eyes!! Practical tips: 1. Bring your questions to your Jesus like St. John did. He welcomes honesty. 2. Look for the small miracles in life, like, joy in suffering, peace in chaos, love in brokenness. 3. Be a bearer of “good news to the poor.” Find someone to uplift this week. 4. If your faith is tired and you are weary, rest in this truth: even the greatest grow weary and our Jesus still calls them great!! If your heart questions, surrender them to our Lord Jesus. Look at the small small ways, He answers them. Our Lord Jesus knows more about us, more than what we know about ourselves. Your faith is not disqualified by your questions. Your hope is not lost just because you're waiting. Our Messiah has come. And He is coming again.

    Seán Ó Conaill – Jaja’s Question: A Blasphemous Theology?

    December 9 2025
    Joe O'Leary
“Of course God works in mysterious ways. Look what he did to his faithful servant Job, even to His own son. But have you ever wondered why? Why did He have to murder his own Son so that we would be Saved? Why didn’t He just go ahead and save us?” I doubt if any priest would say that God murdered his Son or that he did so to avenge his honour. I have never heard that preached. However, let's be careful not to perpetuate what may be a caricature of the great Christian discourses on those "mysterious ways" that combine deep humility in face of the mystery and some modest effort to make sense of it by using theological reason; and what also may be a caricature of mainline Christian preaching and doctrine today. More and more I admire Charles Wesley as perhaps the greatest British theologian. He urged the Church of England to remember the Lutheran component in its heritage, but refused to break with that church even at the cost of a painful break with his brother John. Newman struck the opposite note (in the Lectures on Justification, which was cited as one of his works at the ceremony making him a Doctor of the Church), denouncing Luther and Methodists as heresies, and reading Luther in the framework provided by Catholic polemist Robert Bellarmine, SJ. The tension between High Church and Evangelical Anglicanism thus persists to this day, and may have a lot to do with the threats of schism we hear again and again. Charles Wesley expressed his theology mostly in hymns (and in fact we all know one of them: Hark, the herald angels sing... God and sinners reconciled). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQeIGbKqiw8&list=RD6HPKL1wOVXk&index=6
