13th Sunday Ordinary Time

Opening Comment

On this first Sunday of July, we give thanks to God for all the gifts we enjoy. We rejoice in God’s saving power: death itself is in his hand and all the living depend on God alone.

Penitential Rite: As we prepare ourselves for this celebration, let us remember our need of God’s grace and mercy: (pause) You raise the dead to life in the Spirit … You bring pardon and peace to the sinner … You bring light to those in darkness: Lord, have mercy.

Introduction to the Scripture Readings

Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:22-24 — God is the author of life. He does not want his creation to die. Death entered the world with evil.

2 Corinthians 8:7,9,13-15 — Paul encourages generosity in people who have a lot to share.

Mark 5:21-43 — Jesus shows God’s power and generosity by healing the woman with the haemorrhage and by raising the daughter of Jairus.

BIDDING PRAYERS

Introduction (by the Presider) The Lord listens and has pity, so let us bring our prayers to God.

  1. For those who suffer from all kinds of diseases, that they may experience healing and new strength, according to God’s will (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  2. For all who care for the sick, particularly those who look after the dying, that they may be generous with their time and their compassion (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  3. For all who have experienced the pain of loss, through bereavement or separation, that we may have the grace to make a new start (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  4. For parents who have had to endure the death of a child, that the support of the community and God’s grace may bring them comfort (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  5. For the faithful departed, particularly all those who have died in tragic circumstances, that God may rescue them from eternal death (especially N & N) (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.

Conclusion (by the Presider) Lord our God, you rescue your people from despair and help them in every difficulty: be with us in times of trial and accept our prayers, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
