Opening Comment

Today we honour the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the food which sustains us on our journey through life. May we all grow in appreciation of our ‘Communion with Christ and with one another’.

Alternative Opening Prayer (from 1998 ICEL Missal)

God ever-faithful,
you have made a covenant with your people
in the gift of your Son,
who offered his body for us
and poured out his blood for the many.
As we celebrate this eucharistic sacrifice,
build up your Church
by deepening within us the life of your covenant
and by opening our hearts to those in need.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

Introduction to the Scripture Readings

Exodus 24:3-8 — Moses made an agreement with God on behalf of the people and sealed this covenant in blood.  Hebrews 9:11-15 — The new covenant we celebrate was sealed in the blood of Christ.  Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 — It was at the Last Supper that Jesus gave his body and blood as a parting gift to his followers.

BIDDING PRAYERS

Introduction (by the Presider) Let us call upon the name of the Lord our God, as we bring forward our needs.

  1. For all who share the Bread of Life around the world on this feast — that we may be united in faith and love (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  2. For those who have received Holy Communion for the first time this year — that they may always treasure this precious gift (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  3. For our brothers and sisters who feel unable or unworthy to receive Communion — that they may experience the support and friendship of the Church (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  4. For the people who prepare the bread and wine for us: farmers, bakers and other workers — that they may blessed by God, who feeds the world through their hands (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  5. For all who visit our country this summer — that they may travel safely and be refreshed by the hospitality they receive (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  6. For all our friends who have died — that having shared the Bread of Life, they may be raised up at the last day (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.

Conclusion (by the Presider) Loving God, you nourish your people with your word and with your body: hear our prayers, and continue to help us in our needs, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
