Hebrews 4:12ff. God’s word is a two-edged sword, penetrating soul and spirit; our compassionate high priest sympathises with our weakness. Mark 2:13ff. Jesus calls a tax collector to join him as a disciple, and then proceeds to dine with Matthew/Levi and his friends. Both by word and action he calls sinners, not the self-righteous. Qualities…

Hebrews 3:7ff. Our hearts are to be open, with confidence towards God today, not hardened, doubting and complaining. Mark 1:40ff. Jesus touches and cures the leper; the man ignores his instructions and proceeds to tell everyone about it. The Baptism of the Lord

First Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 42:1-4, 6-7. A servant of God, a chosen one, will courageously serve God and help others to salvation – like Jesus, this servant “fulfils all righteousness.” Acts 10:34-38. The baptism of Jesus in the Jordan was an “anointing with the Holy Spirit” after which he went about doing good….

“Noblesse Oblige” Today’s first reading, surely, is among the finest moral exhortations in the whole Bible. Human beings are called and graced into the image of God; and since God’s essence is love, God’s children must be characterised by their spirit of love. The quality is also how we “live through him” that is, through…

As one community contracts, another expands In spite of its fervent adherence to the person of Jesus and its high ideals of community purity and fraternal love, it is clear from the letters that the Johannine community suffered from grave internal tensions, which eventually led to its break-up, amid reproaches and recrimination. The beginnings of…

Fraternal Love, and Encounter with Christ John’s letter continues its emphasis on fraternal love, as the surest sign that a person is spiritually alive, closely tied to Jesus and living authentically, or “from the truth”. Today he gives to his ideal of love “agapé” a strong flavour of social justice and of sharing, both of…

    Tuesday 4th January

Are We Righteous, or Sinners? John’s letter continues on the idea that Christians are “born of God” but now adds a strong ethical dimension to this: Those who are truly “born of God” do what is right and are “righteous” – mirroring the righteousness of God himself. There is an almost sectarian fervour in the…

Christ-centred Focus The extensive use of the first letter of John in the immediate post-Christmas period is due to its strongly Christ-centred focus, in a meditative, almost mystical tone. In prayerful and somewhat repetitive fashion, John hovers around the theme of salvation and the love of God, incarnated in Jesus. It is through Him that…

Feast of Mary, Mother of God

Num 6:22-27. The solemn priestly blessing, a prayer that God would bless and protect us and be gracious to us, is very apt at the beginning of a new year. Gal 4:4-7. Through the Incarnation, the distance between God and man has been bridged and now we can call God “Abba! Father!” Lk 2:16-21. The…

Sunday within the Christmas Octave. Feast of the Holy Family

Theme: Family life is experiencing a crisis of stability, partly caused by economic hardship, but often by other factors like lack of generosity, or too much insistence on getting one’s own way. Theme Today we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ in our world, though he was with God the Father before all ages. His birth opens up for us a glorious new identity, as children of God. On this major feast, the Scriptures promote a spirit of joy, of our giftedness in having as our Saviour…

    04 Jan 2026 – 2nd Sunday after Christmas

    January 4 2026
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: Believe your Baby Jesus!! Homily: In a toddler's class: Teacher: Why did God become a little baby? Child: God became little because He wanted to be with His little children. This child's words have packaged the basic truth in a simple sentence. God willingly came to the world to be with us out of His own will. All the three readings of today share the same Good News!! God wishes His children to be wise: In the first reading from Sirach, Wisdom speaks almost like a living person. Wisdom tells us that she was created before all ages and then given a place to dwell among God’s people. God says, “Make your dwelling in Jacob.” In other words, God did not keep His wisdom far away in heaven. He planted it among His people. He wanted His people to live guided, protected, and nourished by His wisdom. That already prepares us for what the Gospel will proclaim so boldly: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. God did not send us a message and stay distant. He sent His very self. The psalm repeats, “The Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us.” That word “dwelt” is important. It means He made His home with us. God is not a visitor who comes only on holy days. He is a God who settles in, who strengthens our gates, who feeds us with the finest wheat, who speaks His word into our daily lives. In the second reading, Saint Paul takes this even further and tells us something astonishing. He says we are not just followers, not just servants, not even just believers. We are adopted children of God. Before the foundation of the world, God already chose us in Christ. That means you are not an afterthought. You are not a mistake. You are carefully picked up from a big lot. You are chosen lovingly by God. Many people struggle with feelings of unworthiness. They think, “I have failed too much,” or “I am not spiritual enough,” or “Others seem closer to God than I am.” But you are God's chosen one. Can a father ignore his child because of his child's mistakes? Has our Lord Jesus Christ ignored any sinner? He forgave those who crucified Him on the cross, even before they could ask for forgiveness. Have you ever thought, why did our Lord Jesus leave His big beautiful Heaven and came down to a manger? It was only for us. We are priceless to our Lord. Whether you are a sinner or a saint, He loves you more than Himself. The Gospel of John brings all of this together. The eternal Word, through whom all things were made, entered our darkness. Even when the world did not recognize Him, even when His own did not accept Him, He did not withdraw. Instead, He gave power to all who receive Him to become children of God. Notice that word “power.” It is not just a title. It is a new way of living. You are not trying to earn God’s love. You are living from it. You are not defined by your past or your weaknesses. You are defined by your relationship with Him. He has already stepped into our mess. He understands your pain, your questions, your fears and your failures. So do not keep yourself far away from Him because of the state of your soul. So all that is required to be children of our Almighty Father - "Believe in His Son, our Lord Jesus." Whether you are lying down in a manger or suffering on a cross, He will come and meet you there.
