Synod Report (and reactions): On women’s participation in the life and leadership of the Church

    March 12 2026
    Roy Donovan
In spite of some very good things in this Synodal Report - the underlying message remains the same with the acceptance of gender inequalities around women's ordination. Women remain inferior. We priests are extra special and as the numbers go down, we are even more special. The priesthood is our entitlement, exclusively a male entitlement. This is contrary to the Gospel. The underlying message of the institutional Church is that some men (especially priests) have more entitlements than women. The global world and especially men pick up from the institutional Church's actions round women – that women are inferior and have less entitlements. There are ever present increasing push backs against women. This is evident in Irish society with massive increases of women dying of violence from partners or other males, which has led to an increase in the need for services, supports and refuges for women. The World Health Organization has concluded that ‘Violence against women is rooted in and perpetuated by gender inequalities’. The Church is perpetuating these inequalities. Because the Irish institutional Church will not ordain women, it is not able in a credible way to speak out on this. Women are not allowed to take a seat at the top table and you have to ask the question, 'Does priesthood have an unconscious bias towards women?' Is it not time to face up to this? The Church needs to come out loudly and clearly to the modern world in words and actions that women and men are fully equal. One would expect that the institutional Church, inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ, would be leading the way. Instead, it is secular society and many women who are holding the mirror up to the institutional Church and challenging it to address the complete equality of women in all aspects of the Catholic Church.

Roy Donovan ACP Leadership Team responds to Bishop Coll on Synodality…

    March 4 2026

Of interest surely to Sean and to everyone else here is Crossan's book "In Search of Paul: How Jesus's Apostle opposed Rome's Empire with God's Kingdom", 2004 (co-authored with Jonathan L. Reed). I picked it up for nothing but have not yet read it -- it's historically dense and richly illustrated and is lauded as "an inspiring synthesis of history and theology, politics and religion." I see that the bookshop quarter of Tokyo, Jimbocho, has been voted the coolest quarter in the whole world! Surely hyperbolic, though it has several universities as well. My area, Koenji, used to be called the "poor man's Jimbocho" but has lost its best secondhand bookstores. However, there is a sort of garage sale held in a huge shed every weekend. Today I picked up Kenneth Clark, Looking at Pictures (1960) for 150JPY = .82 Euro, and I am reading the gripping work of Jean Strouse, Alice James, A Biography (1982), which I bought for 200 JPY (1.10 Euro). The problems of space and time which these purchases entail are an insoluble surd.

    15 March 2026 – 4th Sunday of Lent, Year A

    March 15 2026
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: Your Story is for God's Glory!! Homily: A girl was wearing sunglasses even in cold weather. When her friend enquired why, the girl replied, "Since I do not have good looks, people tend to avoid me. But when I wear this costly sunglass, people speak with me without any sign of hesitation". Have you ever felt left out because of your appearance or status? Have you ever felt unwanted by people? David was also of the same status. His own father ignored him and did not even call him to be there, when the Prophet Samuel asked Jesse to bring all his sons. None of his other sons thought about this shepherd brother. David also knew that no one wanted him. He was ignored by everyone. But instead of spending his time worrying about his pitiful situation, he spent his time happily praising God. He spent his entire day praising God with his harp. God was enjoying His songs. He filled His entire day by communicating with God. God loved Him and He loved God. They both were sufficient for each other. When you feel rejected, spend your time with Jesus, who is always longing to spend time with you. When the shepherd boy David became King David, he still had the same relationship with God. Now he is not ignored but he is respected by his whole kingdom. Still, he reciprocates the same feelings he had as a shepherd boy, “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” Saint Paul invites us to have the same relationship with our Lord Jesus, who is the light of the world Light reveals what darkness hides. When we are in light, we will know what is correct and wrong. With Jesus as our light, we will have clarity in our thoughts and the next steps to be taken. He will guide you where you need to go. This leads us to the Gospel. Jesus meets a man who has been blind since birth. The disciples immediately start asking theological questions: “Who sinned?” They root cause every suffering to a sin. But Jesus gives a new perspective. This suffering is for the glory of God. So when others despise you that you are suffering because of your past sins, you can confidently say, "My story is for God's glory to be revealed". Then our Lord Jesus does something unusual. He makes mud, puts it on the man’s eyes, and tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam. The man obeys, washes, and suddenly he can see. Our Lord Jesus can do a miracle not in the way we expect, it can be in a total different way. After the miracle, our Lord always asks us to wash our wastes. After raising Lazarus up, our Lord asked them to unwind Lazarus from his grave clothes. Here the blind person had to wash his eyes to see. So after our Lord Jesus performs a miracle, we have to do our simple part to actually experience the miracle. What to do after the miracle? That our Lord Jesus Christ will reveal. He will not expect us to do something that He has not told us to do. So the message will reach us somehow. It can be even as a thought. But the real miracle in this story is not only physical sight, it is spiritual sight. As the story unfolds, the blind man begins to see more clearly who Jesus is. At first he says, “The man called Jesus healed me.” Then he says, “He is a prophet.” Finally, when Jesus meets him again, the man says, “Lord, I believe.” Meanwhile, the Pharisees who think they see everything clearly refuse to believe. They question, argue, and reject the truth standing right in front of them. And Jesus says something striking: “Those who do not see may see, and those who think they see may become blind.” In other words, the greatest blindness is not in the eyes, it is in the heart. The parents of the blind persons were also afraid. They could have told the same words that their son had told. But they refused to proclaim the great miracle for their son. When our Lord Jesus came to know that the once upon blind person was driven out, our Lord went in search of him. He spoke with him, revealed that it God Himself speaking to him and opened his spiritual eyes too. So do not allow fear to keep you away from experiencing God's Blessings!!
