Many thanks, Pádraig, for flagging up Fr Richard Rohr’s presentation of the Franciscan alternative to St Anselm’s ‘satisfaction’ theory of atonement, from which the notion of penal substitutionary atonement naturally followed - the fundamentalist notion that Jesus takes our place to receive the divine punishment that our sins deserve. That too relies on an understanding of the Father that is simply the opposite of the one that Jesus himself presents, especially in the parable of the Prodigal Son. In that parable the father of the prodigal son is not waiting stiffly for his son’s afflictions to satisfy his injured ‘honour’ but running towards the suffering son he has seen ‘far off’. So does our father in heaven come running, through Jesus, to assure us all that we have never been unloved. In Feb 2019 Richard summarised this Franciscan alternative of e.g., St Bonaventure and Duns Scotus in a series of daily reflections which we in ACI reproduced on the ACI site, linking to Richard’s ‘Centre for Action and Contemplation’. This page still receives consistently high rates of daily visits from all parts, under the title ‘Richard Rohr - Jesus and the Cross'. https://acireland.ie/richard-rohr-jesus-and-the-cross/ Cardinal Bergoglio's choice of 'Francis' for his papal name in 2013, and his turn to 'synodality' in 2021, surely signal an opportunity for this Franciscan theology to overcome the retributive understanding implicit in St Anselm's understanding of atonement. Your own references to the likely influence of that inadequate theology upon the scandalous abusive regimes in many Catholic institutions of the last century, in Ireland and elsewhere, point us towards a deeper understanding of that phenomenon, and of the healed and restored future that now beckons. Key Message: Pray To Chill Out!! Homily: Can you close your eyes and imagine what you will be doing when you do not need to worry. Do that now!! There is no need for us to constantly worry because our Lord Jesus is already clearing out our problems... The first reading prophesied about our Lord Jesus, that He will execute justice and restore righteousness in our land. So it is not our responsibility to execute justice but it is our Lord's responsibility. Let us not put 100 things in our mind and be worried on how to proceed. When it is time, our Lord Jesus will show it!! In one of the gatherings, people were asked to write down what is the most perplexing question in their mind. 75% of the crowd answered, "Am I pleasing to God? How do I live a life pleasing to God?" The second reading clearly answers this question - "You already know how to please God. Do it more and more". This is a very simple and useful testimony - "I was feeling very guilty that I am not connected with God. So I sought Him diligently in the morning prayer. But my thoughts were running here and there. I tried to play a couple of songs on youtube and focus with the help of it, but still my mind was not staying on God. That helped me but still I was intermittently losing my focus on God for an hour. After an hour, I prayed without any disturbance with full focus on Jesus, though it was only for sometime. Once I felt connected, I was really satisfied." In the above testimony, the person got connected with God since he persisted in prayer. He did not do something new, but he repeatedly did the same right thing again and again. Instead of sitting for morning prayer and worrying that he was not able to focus, he consistently prayed, amidst his mental disturbance. It is simple!! God is very simple and He is very interested in making our life easy. In the Gospel reading our Lord Jesus says, "People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world but you guys standup and raise your heads, because your redemption is near". The last days are not for us to fear and faint, but it is for us to expectantly wait for our redemption. Our Lord also tells us how to prepare for His second coming - not to allow our hearts to be weighed down with worries so that we will be able to pray. We should have a good spiritual life, connect with God to live without worry. Another testimony "When I come out of prayer I will not know what is the answer to my problem, but I will know that God will take care of my problem". So when we come out of the prayer, our problems would not have vanished but we will get an inner peace that my Jesus will take care of them. Throughout the day, we will make decisions and some will be critical ones. Whether big or small, listen to God before the decision making process. The small silent voice will guide us. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will guide us by giving inner peace. When we do not have that inner peace, we should not proceed forward in that direction. We should wait and proceed in the direction, in which our Lord gives us inner peace. Little Thérèse of the Child Jesus said that even in the most disturbing trials of her life, the inner peace never left her!! Let us pray and follow the silent voice or our inner peace as our guiding light!!
