    Key Message: Pray the right prayer!! Homily: Imagine that tonight, while you are asleep, our Lord Jesus Christ appears to you, just as He appeared to Solomon. He asks only one question: "Ask what I should give you." What would your answer be? Perhaps some of us would ask: "Lord, heal my illness" or "Lord, help me get a better job" or "Lord, solve my financial problems" or "Lord, bless my children." None of these prayers are wrong. But today's first reading invites us to ask a deeper question: Are we praying the right prayer? God our Father, lovingly gave Solomon a blank cheque: "Ask whatever you want." Solomon could have asked for riches or military power or victory over enemies. But since his heart was set on God, he made a simple request, "Give your servant an understanding heart." And God was so pleased that He gave Solomon not only wisdom, but also riches and honour. We pray for results, while God wants to change our hearts. Like we pray, "Lord, remove this difficult person." But our God says, "I want to teach you patience." We usually pray, "Lord, remove my problems" and God replies, "I want to strengthen your faith." When we say, "Lord, change my circumstances" our God says, "I want to transform your character." Mostly the answer to our prayers depends on how quick we transform. Many times the real issue is the change to be done within us, more than the change that needs to be done around us. Now let us look at our daily prayers. Most of them begin with, "Give me... or bless me..." Again, there is nothing wrong with these prayers. But imagine beginning your prayer differently. Instead of  praying "Lord, remove my difficulties..." pray, "Lord, teach me what You want me to learn through these difficulties." Can we notice the difference? God is far more interested in transforming us than merely making life comfortable. A lady who was undergoing lots of pain due to gynae issues prayed, "Jesus, I offer all my pain to you, along with your sufferings for the salvation of all the souls of the world". She kept offering it for 7 years. One day when she was praying under the crucifix, her pain vanished. So God knows what we need more than we do. He is quietly waiting for a transformation within us. St. Augustine was restless and he was wandering when he wanted to do his own will. But when he desired God's will, his heart felt the rest. "Our hearts are restless until they rest in You, O Lord." In today's Gospel also, our Lord Jesus speaks about the hidden treasure. The merchant finds one pearl of great price. He sells everything to obtain it. What is our Lord saying? When we discover God's Kingdom, every other blessing finds its proper place. Solomon understood this. He first sought God's wisdom. The merchant first sought the Kingdom. Our Lord Jesus later summarized it beautifully: "Seek first the Kingdom of God, and everything else will be given to you besides." The right prayer always puts God first. When a child asked the question on what to pray to Jesus, the teacher replied ,"Pray, Jesus make me love you and love everyone whom you have placed around me". This summarises the two commandments!! What will be the quickest and yet profound prayer that pleases our God? It's the prayer of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane: "Lord, let Your will become my will."

    Julieann Moran: Synodal Pathway Update

    "It is hoped that the Working Document [for the National Synodal Assembly on October 17th 2026] will be published towards the end of August or in early September." As this will leave only about six weeks for digestion of that working document a lot will hinge on just how courageous and concrete it will be in terms of nettle-grasping - especially on the key problem of an inadequate current faith formation model that is far too reliant on schools and has never succeeded in generally involving parents as essential collaborators. In the wake of a failed attempt by Irish Bishops to launch an adult-centred catechetical structure in 2011 ('Share the Good News') the inherited school-reliant system of preparation for early sacraments was declared by the ACP on 8th August 2021 to be 'no longer fit for purpose'. https://associationofcatholicpriests.ie/acp-press-statement-8-aug-2021/ More recently a model of family-led preparation for early sacraments has been trialled in Dublin - reportedly with some success, but the full implications of moving to an adult-focused catechetical and faith formation structure throughout the island have been far too seldom aired and discussed - while adequate resourcing of the training of lay catechists for adult parish catechesis has been lamentably and inexplicably delayed. There are, of course, other 'nettles' but if this especially prickly one is not 'outed' in the imminent working document - with clear proposals to move decisively - it will be extremely difficult to take the synodal process seriously. Of all the issues raised in the synodal discussions of 2022 none were more prevalent or lamented across the dioceses than the widespread absence of younger generations from worship, combined with elder lay uncertainty on how to proclaim the Gospel in contemporary culture. https://acireland.ie/scoping-faith-formation-across-irish-dioceses/ Put simply, the school-reliant faith formation system has left Irish Catholic adults uninvolved and too often tongue-tied when it comes to articulating what they believe, while clergy too often also seem 'at sea' when it comes to 'mission' in Ireland now. Unlike most of the truly 'thorny' issues that depend upon decisions in Rome its full resolution lies fully within our grasp. We must all pray hard that Oct 17th 2026 will be a day of strategic decision, and not just of agreed and polite banalities.

    A further question...why is it assumed that it it more difficult for gay men to commit to celibacy than it is for heterosexual men to make such a commitment?

    My question: Can a man or woman living in faithful celibacy/faithful marriage/faithful Christianity model Jesus Christ in his love, mercy and compassion? My answer based on my experience of human relationships is yes. I believe that the theology of priesthood needs radical reform.
