30th April. Thursday in Week 4 of Easter

    Welcoming the little ones

When Jesus told his disciples to welcome children in his name, it was an important lesson. They were arguing about which of them was most important. But Jesus insisted that seeking social status was not a value for him and had no place the kingdom of God…

    A beacon of light

    Paul’s Mentor

The openness of Barnabas to God’s gifts led him to Tarsus to search for Paul and bring him to join the church in Antioch. If it had not been for him, Paul might have been lost in the silent sands of some desert solitude. ..

    Christian Leadership

What splendid leadership Peter shows, pointing the way forward for the church into the future. He also shows a spirit of dialogue, equally vital for our church of today. When challenged about his daring initiative, Peter patiently explains himself. His leadership is not dictatorial but blends inspiration and dialogue…

    Presider’s Page for 26 April (Easter 4)

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is often called Good Shepherd Sunday, because the readings are about the care we receive from Christ, our true shepherd — a care Christians are invited to copy. Today is also the Day of Prayer for Vocations.

The pastor who cares for people

Jesus speaks of shepherds and sheep, seeing himself as the Good Shepherd foretold by the prophets. It’s about the relationship between the shepherd and the sheep. Though the imagery is old, the message is topical. It is relevant to us here and now. By faith we accept Jesus, and our relationship is a deeply personal one…

    25th April. Saint Mark, Evangelist

    Mark, pioneering Evangelist

According to Papias, after Peter’s death, at the request of the Christians in Rome Mark wrote what he knew of Peter’s memories of Jesus. His Gospel reflects the plain, blunt speaking style of the Galilean fisherman and captures their sense of awe and wonder at the healing power of Christ…

    Source of the Higher Impulses

The Holy Spirit used to be the forgotten person of the Trinity. Perhaps he suffered from being a spirit, since for many of us, only concrete things are real. The Father and Son make an impact because one took flesh and the other was given a beard. Have you ever imagined the Holy Spirit with a beard? Whatever the reason, even among devout Christians, the Holy Spirit had been overlooked…

    Questioning Jesus

Many questions are asked in the course of the gospels. Some are posed by Jesus himself, while others are asked by those who meet him. Today it is the Jews who ask, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

    Ending on a high note

The readings today are the final verses of Acts and of John’s gospel. “Wait until I come.” Eternity will be the continuation of the final moment in our earthly journey. Jesus comes to us again and again. Our prayer now is a foretaste of heavenly joy.

    Learning from an Outsider

God was already drawing the Ethiopian toward faith. This highly-placed eunuch was a God-fearing gentile who believed in Israel’s God, and followed whatever Torah rules were compatible with his family life and culture. The Spirit was attracting this man to a deeper understanding of life…

Even if they first reject it

Philip shares the gospel in Samaria and his message is welcomed. In Luke’s first volume, Jesus tries to speak to the Samaritans but they reject him because he is heading for Jerusalem. But later they welcome his gospel gladly, from the lips of Philip. The gospel can blossom even where it was first rejected …

    Stephen’s death and Christ’s

In Acts, Luke compares Stephen’s martyrdom to Jesus’ death on the cross. Each of them, accused of blasphemy, is condemned to death by the Sanhedrin. Each sees a vision of someone coming on the clouds, at the right hand of God. Each asks God to receive the spirit and each prays for the forgiveness of the executioners

    Invited to believe

Just imagine: Jesus pleading with them to believe him. He invites them to touch him, to give him something to eat, to examine his hands and his feet. Human nature is so fragile, and so fickle. I’m not blaming anyone here. Obviously, this is the first time the apostles ever came across a situation like this. One would have thought that seeing Lazarus, or the daughter of Jairus, or the son of the widow of Naim, get up and walk after having been dead, should have gone some way towards preparing them for this moment.

To serve the Church’s real needs

The appointing of the first deacons suggests a possible solution for a major need facing our Church today: how to ensure continuation of sacramental service to the People of God. It is clear that the apostles did not seek to end all debate on disputed issues by dogmatic decree, forbidding all further discussion! And their process of selecting the deacons — seeking consensus among the faithful about worthy candidates — has much to recommend it…

    Sharing our resources

Today we find Jesus and his disciples faced with a hungry crowd and little or no means of feeding them. In this situation of need, people reacted in different ways. Philip made a calculation: on the basis of the number of people and the amount of money available to buy food, and decided that nothing could be done. Andrew recognized that one of the crowd had a small amount of food but he dismissed this small resource…

    Speaking our truth with love

It can be hard to distinguish inner strength from a stubborn spirit of confrontation. How can we know if our convictions are from God and should be obeyed at all costs? Is it possible that our resistance to authority could be rooted merely in pride? Direct revelations from above must be quite rare, so how can we tell if God is really prompting us?

A religion of sincerity and truth

Peter and John are caught in a conflict that involves the high priest and the entire Sanhedrin besides the temple guards. The apostles are imprisoned, and God sends angels to intervene. This same struggle is echoed at universal level in John’s gospel about God’s sending his only son as the light of this world. Light and darkness clash, leading to a judgment for the world. After being freed by an angel, Peter and John are again in the temple courtyard, preaching to an enthusiastic audience. They seem to ignore their recent escape

Irish Independent: Bishop’s appeal to women not to ‘lure priests into an affair’ sparks criticism from Limerick priest

    August 4 2026
    Joe O'Leary
Paddy, indeed, the fake quality of the noises made by Bishop Hieronymus Emusugut Joya of Maralal in Kenya is PALPABLE. So is the fake quality of this: "Priests and religious freely undertake a commitment to celibacy and to chastity. These commitments are clear and unambiguous and the responsibility for living them faithfully rests entirely with the individual priest, sister or brother, who has made them before God." If we cannot bring our ideological noises into accord with real life we are just making ourselves ridiculous.

Irish Independent: Bishop’s appeal to women not to ‘lure priests into an affair’ sparks criticism from Limerick priest

I am really puzzled by this. Surely it is now accepted, following the research of Donald Cozzens and Richard Sipe, that the vaste majority of our priests in Europe and North America— Canada and the US— 75 to 80%, would definitely not be vulnerable to female seduction and I would find it hard to believe it is any different in Africa.

Tony Flannery: The Judge and the Christian Brothers

    August 8 2026
    Joe O'Leary
Let's not write off any historical church formation. The Irish Christian Brothers are still a mighty phalanx, with 2,700 members worldwide. The Redemptorists are 5,500, the Jesuits 16,000, the SVDs 6,000. There are 5,111 Dominican friars, 25,000 Franciscans, 10,000 Capuchins (of whom 7,000 are priests). I checked in at a huge Hostel (Sette Santi) in Florence a few days ago, and slowly discovered where I was -- it was the convent of the Servite priests in the past, and also a school -- I discovered that the adjacent church had daily Mass, so joined this morning and had a great chat about the most famous Servite, Paolo Sarpi (https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paolo_Sarpi ), with the priest, who invites me to use the library of Ss Annunciata, the place where the order was founded in the middle ages by the "seven saints", and who recommends me to pursue my Sarpi research in Rome and Padua -- so this infernal summer suddenly takes on new meaning as a pilgrimage. Florence is the city of Dante and this summer it is especially the city of the Inferno, brutally burning. The hostel costs only 30 Euro a night and I have a room to myself (though earlier there was also a policeman from Cali, Colombia, who must be devastated now by the earthquake there). There are 800 Servites worldwide and they seem to be thriving quietly and happily.

Priests Against Genocide Network Zoom with Cardinal A Ramazzini, Prof Omer Bartof and Fr David Neuhaus SJ

    August 8 2026
    Robert McDonnell
Stating that there has been, or is currently a genocide in Gaza is disingenuous and untrue. The International Court of Justice has yet to adjudicate on the allegation lodged by South Africa, the ICJ has not made a definitive finding to date. Hamas attacked Israel with genocidal intent on 7th October 2023, brutally killing 1200+ civilians, including women, children, and burning families in their homes, the worst single death toll of Jewish civilians since the Holocaust genocide during WWII. Hamas also kidnapped 250 people, 85% Jewish, taking them into Gaza. Hamas (and Hezbollah) as well as their mentor, funder and arms supplier, Iran, have stated clearly that they want to destroy Israel, and Hamas/Hezbollah have consistently launched attacks on Israel for the past 25 years. Hamas knew full well when they launched their genocidal attack on Israel on 7th October that it would provoke an absolutely brutal response. After this, Israel would no longer tolerate attacks from Hamas, leading to the invasion of Gaza. If Israel wanted to genocide the people of Gaza, they could have done so in an instant, they didn't, their aim was to eliminate Hamas, and find and free their hostages. The known prospect of a response leading to thousands of civilian deaths didn't deter Hamas from their genocidal attack on 7th October, because their ultimate aim is the elimination of Israel. The primary responsibility for the deaths and destruction in Gaza lies with Hamas and their sponsor, Iran. If Hamas had not attacked Israel on October 7th the 55,000 civilians and 15,000 Hamas soldiers and operatives killed would all still be alive today and Gaza would still be intact. Instead Hamas misused billions in foreign aid they had received over the previous 15 years to build a huge network of tunnels, bigger than the London Underground, for arms storage, command centres and concealment under residential apartment blocks, schools and hospitals, deliberately using their own population as human shields, they trained and prepared for their 2023 genocidal attack on Israel years ahead. What we see in Gaza now is the direct result. With regard to genocide, there have been ongoing genocidal attacks on Christians by terrorist groups in Nigeria for the last 15 years. It is estimated that 23,000 Christians have been murdered because of their faith since 2020, and 3,500 in the past year alone, with hundreds of churches and villages destroyed in the past decade. Just last year in Syria 3,000 people from minorities, Alawites and Druze, but also Christians, were murdered in targeted possibly genocidal attacks. Strangely, we never hear one word in the mainstream media about these genocidal atrocities, nothing. Why? Is it because no Jews are involved? One could speculate that if Israel/Jews were responsible for the atrocities in Nigeria and Syria that we would be hearing news headlines about it every day, but as they are not involved, we hear nothing. Does the genocide question only matter when Jews are accused of being perpetrators and not Muslims? If not, why the silence about the murders of thousands of Nigerian Christians, or atrocities against minorities in Syria? Recently, Jewish people living in Ireland, the UK, Europe and North America have expressed dismay at the rise in anti-Jewish hatred they have experienced in the past few years, more than they've ever seen. This is frightening and seems to be directly related to the conflict since October 2023. So, when one accuses Israel of genocide and promotes a one-sided narrative without a determination by the ICJ, isn't there surely a strong risk of feeding anti-Semitic hatred, even if unintentionally?
