Opening Comment

As weak and sinful people, we gather to ask the Lord’s mercy. We know his grace is sufficient for us. Together, we praise and thank our God for the constant care we receive.

Penitential Rite: For a moment, we remember our weakness, in the light of God’s strength: (pause) Lord Jesus, you raise us to new life … you forgive us our sins … you feed us with your body and blood: Lord, have mercy.

 

Introduction to the Scripture Readings

Ezekiel 2:2-5 — The prophet is inspired to speak out, even though God knows the people may not listen.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10 — Paul writes about his frailty, which makes him rely all the more on God’s grace.

Mark 6:1-6 — Like many other prophets before him, Jesus finds no acceptance in his home town.

 

BIDDING PRAYERS

 Introduction (by the Presider) Brothers and sisters, let us ask God to have mercy on us and hear our prayers.

  1. For those called to speak in God’s name today, that may have the courage of the prophets of old (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  2. For people scandalised by injustice and the lack of truth in our world, that they may themselves have the courage to speak out against evil (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  3. For those who feel weighed down by their own weakness, that they may rely on God’s grace to lift them up (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  4. For the gift of perseverance, that we may be true to what we believe, come what may (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  5. For all Irish people who have died in war or in the service of the United Nations (and for N who died recently & N whose anniversaries occur) that they may rest in eternal peace (pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.
  6. For our own needs, which we remember now in silence… (long pause for silent prayer). Lord, hear us.

Conclusion (by the Presider) Lord our God, our eyes are fixed on you till you show us your mercy: let your grace stay with us each day, and listen to the prayers we make, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
