  • Weekday Homily Resources

6th March. Friday in 2nd Week of Lent

Providence at work.. The story of Jacob’s sons is told in detail (Gen 37-50) to conclude the book of Genesis. It has one overriding motif found at the end in Joseph’s words to his brothers: “Even though you meant harm to me, God meant it for good, to achieve his purpose, the survival of many ” (50:19-20). Mysteriously yet powerfully God can bring a convoluted, mixed-up and even misguided life to a positive end..

In spite of appearances Jeremiah was bearing fruit, and Lazarus kept his integrity even though sitting with dogs and begging for crumbs at Dives’ door! Destitution can destroy one’s confidence and self-respect, but in principle it can and does coexist with inner peace and strength. The beggar can be nearer to God than the banker, the cardinal, the CEO or the government minister…

Drinking from his cup.. Jesus asks James and John, “Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?” He was asking them if they were prepared to share his cup, to throw in their lot with him, to follow where he leads, even though it may mean the cross. In the garden of Gethsemane Jesus prayed..

Confessing to God: This public confession on the part of the people of Israel is one that we, the church, can make our own. We know that we too have failed, as individuals and as a community. Yet, it is to such individuals and to such a community that the Lord issues the invitation in today’s gospel, “Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate.” Jesus is calling on us to be nothing less than God-like…

    Presider’s Page for 1 March (Lent 2)

As we continue to celebrate Lent, it’s important that we keep the goal of our journey before us. The gospel of the transfiguration is read on this lenten Sunday each year, to remind us to hold firm to a vision of glory, on dark days. Easter and its joy will follow this season of penance, just as the resurrection followed the passion and death of Jesus.

1st March. Second Sunday of Lent

What must be cast aside? The story of Abraham and Isaac is full of high drama. The demand that Isaac be sacrificed seemed to utterly contradict God’s promise that the boy would pass on Abraham’s line into the distant future. It was a radical trial of faith, and no greater test of obedience could be set. Abraham’s heart was pierced by the boy’s innocent question, “Where is the lamb for the burnt offering?..

    Perfect, but not Perfectionist.
If we hear that someone is a perfectionist, it can conjure up in our minds someone who is very demanding and rather fussy about getting everything right down to the last detail. When Jesus says at the end of today’s gospel, “Be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect,” that is not what he means

    Autonomy and Responsibility.
Ezekiel calls us to persevere in doing good across a lifetime. In Matthew’s gospel Jesus roots the discernment of good and evil in the depths of the human heart. We must do more than keep a set of rules, stopping short of murdering others; we must aim to be at peace with them and not harbour anger or resentment. Jesus names the objects of our patience and kindness: they are our brother and our sister.

    Taking risks.
Esther risked going to the Persian king on behalf of her people. She knew the initiative could cost her life, yet if she just hid in her ivory tower while her people were destroyed, she would be haunted with guilt. How often in life people prefer to turn a blind eye when a risky action is called for.

    Exemplary Ninive.
How marvellous that the once pagan city of Nineveh can come to believe in God, proclaim a fast, pray for forgiveness, to become a model of goodness for all the rest of us! Hope can come from unsuspected quarters! Jonah adds that when God saw the repentance of Nineveh, he “repented of the evil he had threatened to do to them.” If God can change his mind, how can we be rigid in condemning others?

    Jesus on prayer.
The gospels often portray Jesus at prayer, sometimes even suggesting the content of his prayer. But only once is Jesus presented as teaching his disciples a prayer for them to pray, and that prayer has become known to us as the Lord’s Prayer. It has had a privileged place within the Christian tradition because it is the only prayer Jesus explicitly taught us to pray…

Today we celebrate the first Sunday of Lent. All over the world today, people of all ages are beginning their preparation period for baptism at the Easter Vigil. Like them, we begin our own preparations for Easter, looking forward to renewing our baptismal vows and being blessed with Easter water.

    Shun not the Struggle.
One way of looking at life is to see it as a struggle between sin and grace, selfishness and holiness. Our time on earth will be successful in the measure that we put aside sin and try to live by the grace of God. Today’s Scriptures show two contrasting reactions to temptation. The first humans, Adam and Eve, are imagined as preferring their own inclinations to the will of God.

    Lord of the Welcomes.
The converted tax collector is not treated as a second-class citizen, simply for coming late into the Lord’s circle of friends. Fasting of another kind.
We normally link fasting with food. To fast is to deprive ourselves of certain foods for a period of time. But in the first reading Isaiah defines fasting more broadly. He understands it as leaving aside all those ways of relating to people that damage and oppress them and replacing such ways of relating with working for justice on behalf of those in greatest need…

    Denial of Self?
Jesus says that if we want to be his followers we have to be ready to renounce ourselves. Lent is traditionally a time for self-denial. We ask ourselves what it is we need to let go, to give up, in order to follow the Lord more closely…

    Transience.
Ash Wednesday could hardly make more visible and tangible the transience of things and our mortality. We start Lent in humility, close to the ground, close to our earthiness: remember you are dust and to dust you shall return. But we do not gather on Ash Wednesday just to commemorate the transience of creation. The ashes used this Wednesday are the residue of last year’s Passion Sunday palms…

    Misunderstanding.
In the gospel today, Jesus seems very frustrated with is own disciples. In spite of all he has said and done in their presence, they still do not really understand who he is or what he is about. They are misunderstanding his words and not grasping the real significance of his deeds, such as his feeding of the multitudes.

    19 July 2026 – 16th Sunday, (A)

    July 19 2026
    Thara Benedicta
Key Message: The Battle is within you. Nourish the seed, not the weed!! Homily: Student: "Why did God plant the tree of good and evil in the garden?" Teacher: "God did not plant the tree of good and evil in the garden. God is all good. God creates good things only. Remember in the book of Genesis it says, after creating the world, "God saw everything was good". The tree of good and evil was planted by the enemy to make us sin. If God had planted the tree, why would God say, "Do not eat the fruit of this tree alone". When God plants good seeds, the enemy tries to erase it by planting bad seeds. So we need to obey God's guidance and reject the enemy's temptation". In today's Gospel, our Lord Jesus says, "An Enemy Has Done This" When the servants were confused, they asked Jesus, "Master, didn't you sow good seed?" In other words, "If God created the world, where did evil come from?" Our Lord Jesus explains an ignored truth "An enemy has done this." The hatred, jealousy, addiction are all planted by the enemy. Let us look in our day to day life: Each morning, Christ sows patience. Before lunch, someone tests our patience. Our Lord sows forgiveness. Then someone hurts us. Our Lord sows humility. Someone praises another person instead of us. In all these situations, immediately another seed appears...resentment, pride, anger, jealousy... So the battlefield is not first outside us. It is inside us. It is within us. Every day, two voices compete for our attention. One invites us toward Christ. The other quietly whispers, "You deserve revenge." "Hold on to that grudge." "Think only about yourself." Now the question in front of us is: Which seed am I watering? Let us watch our thoughts. What you focus on more, is the seed you are watering... Now let us look at the next question from the servants, "Shall we pull up the weeds?" It is like not giving the time for people to change. But our Lord Jesus never gives up on us. He gives time for us to change. So our Lord responds, "No... let both grow together." For example, St. Augustine's conversion happened after 17 long years. So let us also not give up on anyone. Probably there is a conversion happening and we are yet to recognise it. Let us look at the Mustard Seed. The Kingdom begins like the smallest seed. The mustard seed can be watered by a five-minute prayer or a quiet apology or a hidden act of generosity or reading the scripture or blessing someone who hurt you... These seem insignificant. But God's Kingdom inside you grows quietly. The infilling of the Holy Spirit happens quietly. It will take time even for you to recognise the transformation within you. Our Jesus works in silence. He plants the seed in silence. The more we water the seed, the quicker it will grow. The next example is "The Yeast" Yeast is almost invisible. Yet it transforms the entire dough. True Christians are like yeast. Instead of complaining about the darkness they become the light. They don't spread gossip or increase fear. They spread hope. We feel that our lives cannot make a change. Often we question, "What difference can one Christian make?" But we see the answer in history. One Francis of Assisi renewed the Church. Mother Monica transformed Augustine through prayer. St. Augustine still teaches us. So one person is sufficient to change the future of his entire family. Can you be that one person? Our Divine Farmer Jesus never abandons His field. We are His top priority. He is patient because He sees not only what you are today, but what His grace can make you tomorrow.

Fr John Heagle: A prisoner of conscience is dying, and the world is silent

Israel must release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and all Palestinian medical personnel arbitrarily detained and adhere to international law, UN Commission of Inquiry says https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2026/07/israel-must-release-dr-hussam-abu-safiya-and-all-palestinian-medical?sub-site=HRC The Commission observes that the reported conduct of the Israeli authorities towards Dr. Abu Safiya reflects a broader pattern of violations previously identified in the Commission’s reports. The Commission found that Israeli security forces deliberately killed, wounded, detained, and severely mistreated medical personnel, constituting the war crimes of wilful killing and torture and the crime against humanity of extermination. The military operations against medical personnel were found to be part of a concerted policy to destroy the health-care system of Gaza. The Commission also found that the Israeli authorities committed the crime of genocide through the policy of targeting the healthcare system and medical professionals in Gaza since October 2023, intentionally forcing Palestinians to live without access to crucial medical care, consequently killing many and causing further irreparable harm which prevented their capacity and possibility to heal, recover and live.

Seamus, your last paragraph on Trump was hilarious, even though it is painfully true.

Fr John Heagle: A prisoner of conscience is dying, and the world is silent

Is that the same Dr Hussam Abu Safiya of Kamal Adwan Hospital who is also an alleged Colonel in Hamas, who knew other Hamas operatives working in the hospital as Health Care staff, and who was aware that a Hamas military command centre was based in the hospital, who allegedly praised the 7th Oct 23 genocidal attack by Hamas military on Israel, notwithstanding that Hamas has the destruction of Israel and the genocide of its people at the core of its foundation charter? Is that the same Dr Hussam Abu Safiya? https://x.com/i/status/2076293543425900548 (Ed: On the other hand, check this link for a counter argument: https://ngo-monitor.org/reports/the-campaign-to-whitewash-the-director-of-a-hamas-controlled-hospital/)
