    How Much Activity?

While good intentions can drive one to overactivity and even to misguided zeal, the Scriptures defend human activity and good works as essential to salvation. For interpreting today’s scripture readings we must keep in…

    Divine Reversals

Today’s texts deal with divine reversals. Sometimes we may resemble Jonah who attempted to use the sea to flee away from the God of earth and sea. But God has wonderful ways of bringing us back to our senses,

The church is the choice vineyard of the Lord, planted for a noble and productive purpose.  We pray that our lives may never be soured by bitterness or disillusionment.

27th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Liturgy preparation

There are reassuring words in God’s Word  this Sunday, with Paul reminding believers that there is no need to worry (see Philippians 4:6-9). As they gather for worship, they hope that if there is anything they need, they can pray for it and God’s peace will be theirs.

    Rejoicing in the Spirit

The secret stirring of the heart comes marvellously to the surface in Jesus’ prayerful rejoicing in the Holy Spirit, “what you have hidden from the learned and the clever, you have revealed to the merest children.”

    Memories and Hopes

Today’s text from Baruch dates to the Babylonian exile (587-539 B.C.), and the verse immediately preceding refers the autumnal feast of Tabernacles. A collection was being taken up, to be sent to Jerusalem for sacrifices and for helping the poor in the holy city

    Harvest Thanksgiving

A parish’s harvest thanksgiving can take the form of a special Eucharist or an ecumenical Service, or it can take place over the varied liturgies of a weekend. Relevant local people can be involved in in planning this event: in rural areas, members of organisations like the IFA or Macra might participate. Schoolchildren decorate the church for the celebration, reflecting all the beautiful elements of creation.

    Making The Journey

Today we are invited to share in a journey to Jerusalem and the holy temple, there to worship God with many others. The spirit with which we travel forms the spirit with which we join in prayer at our gathering in church. This spirit, as we learn from the three readings, is not a generic

    Children’s Merits

Children remain the key to reflection through today’s readings and give a glimpse of the new Jerusalem, Zechariah pictures the city with “boys and girls playing in the streets” and in the gospel Jesus turns to children to teach about the “greatest in the Kingdom of God.”

    Theme

Jesus warns that prostitutes and tax-collectors may be closer to God than the religious leaders. Our social or religious standing gives us no exclusive rights to the mercy of God. The parable of the two sons, neither of whom does what he says he will do, highlights the dictum that “actions speak louder than words.”

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Liturgy preparation

Christians believe God’s love is displayed in the life and death of Jesus. At the Sunday Eucharist they rejoice in this love, and celebrate the victory over sin and death won for them. God’s challenging word is read and the Bread of Life shared by all who gather.

    Enigmatic Future

Today’s Scriptures send out two quite different signals about the future. Zechariah’s prophecy is strong in symbolic expressions of hope, while Jesus speaks bluntly and sternly about his death. Without the sobering reminder of death, the hopes expressed by the prophecy might deserve the

    Life’s Various Stages

All of life’s stages are represented in today’s texts. Even though each of us individually may identify with only one of these stages at this particular moment, we must come to a peaceful acceptance of our past and we need to prepare in advance for what lies ahead. Moreover as each of us lives in

    Responses to Confusion

People can be faced with economic confusion, as reflected in the prophecy of Haggai; or again their religion may consist of mere curiosity, born of moral confusion, as was the case with Herod the tetrarch. But no situation is hopeless, for the Bible is not the story of sin and hell but of sin and conversion.

    Knowing and Doing

Today’s Reading shows in what a variety of ways the will of God is made known and accomplished. Ezra refers to imperial decrees from the Persian kings Cyrus and Darius, messages of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah (which will begin later this week), and financial help from Persian taxes, as supporting the sanctuary liturgy and the functions of priests and Levites.

    The Power Of Cryptic Statements

Jesus’ word about the lampstand is clear, though startling in its implications; his next word, however, about having and gaining, or not-having and losing even that little, is enigmatic and baffling, like so many of the best proverbs in the sapiential literature.

    Theme

“Seek the Lord while he may be found” is one side of today’s readings. We all have some reason to identify with those workers of the eleventh hour,

Brendan Hoban: Fuel protests were nightmare vision of future

Brendan, this Article is Brilliant. An excellent analysis of our first meaningful taste of dystopia as a nation. You have coined a Brilliant phrase that will surely never be forgotten: "indicative of a quality of leadership that doesn’t warrant even being placed in charge of a henhouse." I laughed so much at this! Congratulations!

Brendan Hoban: Fuel protests were nightmare vision of future

Is it possible that even some of the most militant could see the abyss they had taken the country to, and how everything depends on those who simply turn up to do essential jobs, without grandstanding? Heroics propped up by heavy machinery and designed for media are one thing. True heroism is something else. Let’s pray that’s sinking in.

Brendan Hoban: Bishop’s youth thesis is not rooted in reality

Hi. I am a young person, and I love traditions (not just for the aesthetics, but also for their potential to inspire spiritual grow). However, the Church’s stances on many issues (especially on women and LGBTQ) are too out of step with the way my generation grew up. I have no choice but to choose my friends and support them in their daily struggles over the Church’s traditions. I’m deeply saddened and tormented that I cannot do both.

    03 May 2026 – 5th Sunday of Easter, (A)

Key Message: The Goal of our life: To reach our Heavenly Father!! Homily: Testimony: "Once I was feeling very inferior that all my brothers and sisters are financially well, much more than me. I was thinking about it, then my Lord Jesus said, "I have blessed you more than them". That gave me a sudden realisation, that though they are residing in palatial houses, I am enjoying much more, because I am serving His children. Therefore I am enjoying more peace and inner strength. I understood that my brother Jesus would have built a grand palace for me". A teenage girl said, "I was wondering what the goal of my life was. What was the end I needed to reach? I knew that I needed to have a career, family and so on.. but where would it all lead to? Then I finally got the Eureka moment. My final destination is reaching my Father in Heaven". In today's Gospel reading, our Lord Jesus reminds us, “In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places… I go to prepare a place for you.” Our end goal cannot be satisfied with career or any kind of achievements. Our race will be successfully completed, when we reach our Heavenly mansions. Every other goal is only temporary. Also, our Lord Jesus cannot build our mansion with our Sunday trip to church alone. He requires the raw materials from our entire life. Though there are many responsibilities to fulfil, we need to spend time with our Lord Jesus. Otherwise we become tired, lose our direction, easily troubled and lose clarity. Our first calling is your relationship with Jesus. And if you are called to take care of spiritual needs of your focus, continue to focus only on your spiritual calling. We can delegate our other responsibilities like the Apostles in the First reading. Though we may be helping others, we should not lose time to nourish ourselves in the presence of Jesus. The Apostles prioritised their activities. They prioritized Prayer over anything else. We can become so busy, that we forget Jesus Himself. Do not replace your Jesus time with activity, because work without prayer leads to emptiness. Our Lord Jesus is not asking us to do more. He is asking you, “Will you walk with Me?” Because if you stay with Him, He will lead you safely to the Father. Practical tips: 1. Fix your daily time with Jesus Even 10–15 minutes is fine. Prayer, scripture and 1:1 discussion moment with our Lord Jesus. The Apostles regarded this as "Non-negotiable". 2. Start your day with direction Keep Lord Jesus in front and ask Him, “Lord, lead me to the Father today.” 3. Do not get lost in busyness Ask yourself: “Am I doing this with Jesus… or without Him?” 4. Always have the end goal in mind. Even for small tasks, recall that your end goal is reaching our Father in Heaven. Ask yourself, "Am I moving a step forward or backward?" When we live like this, we will experience inner peace. We are not just living for today…we are living for eternity.
