25th Sunday in Ordinary Time — Liturgy Preparation

The unusual parable of the payment of workers in the vineyard is told in the Gospel of today’s Mass. It challenges those who gather for worship to see that ‘God’s ways are not our ways. God’s love and generosity are beyond our understanding.’

    Mysterious Potential

A divine potential simmers in the depths of each human being. Both Jesus and his apostle Paul compare it to a seed, buried in the ground. Looking at the seed before it is planted, one hardly suspects what a flower is to develop from it. The process by which the seed “dies” or disintegrates within the earth

    Enthusiasm and Sobriety

Contrasting with the sombre reading from Timothy, is the tone of enthusiasm, hope and achievement in today’s Gospel story. While the Gospel has more appeal, the other text also have its necessary place in church life. Sometimes we need to be sobered up from intense excitement.

    Theme

It is false to celebrate our God as the Lord of compassion and love, unless we show mercy to those who have wronged us. Today’s Gospel calls us to forgive others as Christ forgives us. Some of the finer minds among the Old Testament writers already perceived this connection:

24th Sunday of Ordinary Time — Liturgy Preparation

The anniversary of the attack on New York falls on a Sunday this year —and it coincides with Mass readings that focus on forgiveness as a Christian virtue. In the liturgy this Sunday, those who gather for worship will celebrate God’s mercy, and ask for the grace to pass it on to those who cause hurt.

    Respecting Others’ Gifts

The readings centre mostly on leadership but their application reaches out to all human relationships. Very positively too we are asked to interact with one another, not so much as superior to inferior but as recognizing the unique gift of each person. It is because of diversity of strength and grace that problems arise and helpful direction is necessary.

08 Sept, Thursday, The Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary

    A grace-filled birth

It is not certain exactly when or where Our Lady was born; but it was most likely about sixteen years before the birth of Jesus, and in Nazareth, where St Luke’s Gospel locates her, as she received God’s message from the angel. It was only after the Council of Ephesus in 431 – when Mary was designated as “Theotokos” (“Mother of God”) – that devotion to her spread far and wide in the Western Church. But well before that time, the exceptional circumstances of her birth were remembered and celebrated among the Christians of Palestine.

    A Spiritual Dawning

We note a dramatic transition from death to life in Colossians, from public wrangling to a new life in Jesus and the Spirit in 1 Corinthians(*2); and in the Gospel from night-time to a new dawn. Theme

We may have a moral obligation to correct blatant wrongdoing, whether in the family, the workplace or the wider society. But it is incumbent on parents, and all who have others in their care, to administer such correction with love and respect. The old dictum, that one should “hate the sin but love the sinner” is a good guideline in many situations, as is St Paul’s principle: “Owe no one anything, except to love one another.”

Brendan Hoban: Fuel protests were nightmare vision of future

Brendan, this Article is Brilliant. An excellent analysis of our first meaningful taste of dystopia as a nation. You have coined a Brilliant phrase that will surely never be forgotten: "indicative of a quality of leadership that doesn’t warrant even being placed in charge of a henhouse." I laughed so much at this! Congratulations!

Brendan Hoban: Fuel protests were nightmare vision of future

Is it possible that even some of the most militant could see the abyss they had taken the country to, and how everything depends on those who simply turn up to do essential jobs, without grandstanding? Heroics propped up by heavy machinery and designed for media are one thing. True heroism is something else. Let’s pray that’s sinking in.

Brendan Hoban: Bishop’s youth thesis is not rooted in reality

Hi. I am a young person, and I love traditions (not just for the aesthetics, but also for their potential to inspire spiritual grow). However, the Church’s stances on many issues (especially on women and LGBTQ) are too out of step with the way my generation grew up. I have no choice but to choose my friends and support them in their daily struggles over the Church’s traditions. I’m deeply saddened and tormented that I cannot do both.

    03 May 2026 – 5th Sunday of Easter, (A)

Key Message: The Goal of our life: To reach our Heavenly Father!! Homily: Testimony: "Once I was feeling very inferior that all my brothers and sisters are financially well, much more than me. I was thinking about it, then my Lord Jesus said, "I have blessed you more than them". That gave me a sudden realisation, that though they are residing in palatial houses, I am enjoying much more, because I am serving His children. Therefore I am enjoying more peace and inner strength. I understood that my brother Jesus would have built a grand palace for me". A teenage girl said, "I was wondering what the goal of my life was. What was the end I needed to reach? I knew that I needed to have a career, family and so on.. but where would it all lead to? Then I finally got the Eureka moment. My final destination is reaching my Father in Heaven". In today's Gospel reading, our Lord Jesus reminds us, “In My Father’s house there are many dwelling places… I go to prepare a place for you.” Our end goal cannot be satisfied with career or any kind of achievements. Our race will be successfully completed, when we reach our Heavenly mansions. Every other goal is only temporary. Also, our Lord Jesus cannot build our mansion with our Sunday trip to church alone. He requires the raw materials from our entire life. Though there are many responsibilities to fulfil, we need to spend time with our Lord Jesus. Otherwise we become tired, lose our direction, easily troubled and lose clarity. Our first calling is your relationship with Jesus. And if you are called to take care of spiritual needs of your focus, continue to focus only on your spiritual calling. We can delegate our other responsibilities like the Apostles in the First reading. Though we may be helping others, we should not lose time to nourish ourselves in the presence of Jesus. The Apostles prioritised their activities. They prioritized Prayer over anything else. We can become so busy, that we forget Jesus Himself. Do not replace your Jesus time with activity, because work without prayer leads to emptiness. Our Lord Jesus is not asking us to do more. He is asking you, “Will you walk with Me?” Because if you stay with Him, He will lead you safely to the Father. Practical tips: 1. Fix your daily time with Jesus Even 10–15 minutes is fine. Prayer, scripture and 1:1 discussion moment with our Lord Jesus. The Apostles regarded this as "Non-negotiable". 2. Start your day with direction Keep Lord Jesus in front and ask Him, “Lord, lead me to the Father today.” 3. Do not get lost in busyness Ask yourself: “Am I doing this with Jesus… or without Him?” 4. Always have the end goal in mind. Even for small tasks, recall that your end goal is reaching our Father in Heaven. Ask yourself, "Am I moving a step forward or backward?" When we live like this, we will experience inner peace. We are not just living for today…we are living for eternity.
