Opening Comment
October is Mission Month. In two weeks time we will honour the work of missionaries on Mission Sunday; throughout the month, we remember that ‘Christian Families are Missionary Families’. And we praise God’s constant care for all people, at home and abroad.
• Today is Day for Life in Ireland, on which we pray for the victims of human trafficking, especially those vulnerable people who find themselves used as slaves in Ireland.
Penitential Rite
As we enter into this celebration, we recall times we have failed to show love, never forgetting God’s mercy (pause)

Alternative Opening Prayer (for Year B, from the 1998 ICEL Missal)
Creator God,
in Christ you call man and woman
to the fullness of glory
for which you created them in your image.
Heal our hardened hearts,
renew our obedience to your spoken will,
and conform our lives to your gracious design.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever.
Introduction to the Scripture Readings
Genesis 2:18-24 — Includes the second creation story given in the Bible: we are taught here that man and woman are meant to be together.
Hebrews 2:9-11 — On most Sundays between now and the feast of Christ the King, the second reading will be from the Letter to the Hebrews. This was written about AD 80, to show the people of the time that Jesus fulfilled the needs of Jews and Greeks alike.
Mark 10:2-16 — Jesus instructs his followers about family life, repeating the teaching given in Genesis and telling all to be as trustful as little children.
BIDDING PRAYERS
Introduction (by the Presider) The Lord blesses us all our days, so let us ask for help and strength.
- For people affected by the earthquake in Indonesia — that they may have the help they need (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- For victims of human trafficking in Ireland — that they be supported (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- For our leaders — that they may work to end modern slavery (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- For all who follow Christ — that we may trust in God, like little children (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- For married people — that the Holy Spirit may inspire them in difficult times (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
- For the lonely — that they may have friends to support them (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
The Presider prays for the dead: For all our people whose days in this world are over (especially N and N), that with joy they may enter their heavenly homeland (pause for five seconds and pray quietly). Lord, hear us.
Conclusion (by the Presider) O Lord our God, you bless those who trust in your ways: hear the prayers we make in faith, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord God,
accept the sacrifice
which we celebrate at your command

It is truly right and just,
our duty and our salvation,
always and everywhere to give you thanks,
holy Father, almighty and eternal God.
You created man and woman out of love
and raised them to such a dignity
that in the union of husband and wife
you show us a true image of your love:
love is our origin,

Thus, the sacrament of marriage,
an abiding sign of your own love,
consecrates the love between husband and wife.

Lord, you are holy indeed,
you are the fountain of all holiness.
[In communion with the whole Church,
we have assembled on this day which you have made holy,
and, rejoicing that you have made us a new creation in your risen Son,

Send down your Spirit upon these gifts to make them holy,
that they may become for us
the body + and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Before he was given up to death,

The mystery of faith…..
Remembering therefore his death and resurrection,
we offer you, Lord God,
this life-giving bread, this saving cup.

may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.
Lord, remember your Church throughout the world:
perfect us in love
together with Francis our Pope and N. our Bishop,

Remember our brothers and sisters
who have gone to their rest
